Saturday, April 21, 2012 10:59:19 PM Dear Paperduck the word cologne (pronounced coh-lone) has a "G" in it because the word cologne,for " toilet water" (which refers to the lightly scented water which was used used when performing your "toilette" or "toilet" which was the word for doing your hair, make-up and freshening up )is from Cologne, the French (and English) name of the German city Köln, where cologne has been made since the beginning of the 18th century. The first use of the word cologne for toilet water is recorded in English in 1814. the words "eau de cologne" translates from French as "water of cologne." We could say, then, "water from the colony" is how this kind of perfume got its name.....history is EVERYTHING !
