@lawndartsftw
If the media is so silent on all of these other issues, how do we all know about them? Who the heck knew who Jerry Sandusky was 2 years ago? Would you trust Little Lawndartsftw alone with a couple priests?

Lawndart, there is no organization as large or as powerful that has shown such a systemic problem with abuse of minors and attempts to cover it up, than with the catholic church. You prefer to highlight the 1 bad apple teacher, versus addressing a global problem of raping children by one of the most powerful organizations in the world?

by definition any "religious sect" in existence less than 100 years is a cult, so no, Catholics aren't cultists. But, as an organization it has caused one helluva lotta wars, tortures and thefts. The Vatican contains more of the worlds historical and monetary riches than anyone knows but you had all better pay your Catholic dues to feed those starving children of Vatican city.

Relinquish all of your earthly possessions! Except the pope should wear the finest silks and have the highest quality jewelry and have a personal driver and servants! God would approve!

The media went to town with the Catholic sex abuse scandal (and it should, no prob with that), yet, child sex abuse by public school teachers, Boy scout leaders, and minor Sports coaches occurs atthe same or higher rates/levels, and the Media is silent. Until there is some even-handed reporting on theses other areas, well, why should I pay any attention to what the media says about the Catholic church ???

And, as for all those sex scandals...repressed memories have been disproven. It's actually been discovered that people of childhood traumas suffer from PTSD, which causes them to remember every small detail.
Repressed memories have been discovered to be implanted by psychologists who've had a vandetta against the church (probably victims of abuse, but the numbers are far fewer). Not saying it didn't happen, of course it happened, but it wasn't as widespread.
Keep in mind, the Catholic Church is founded on forgiveness of sins. If a person confesses a crime to a priest, the priest is compelled *not* to tell anyone. He can recommend that the person turn himself over to the authorities, but what the person does (in the Church's eyes) is between God and man. If the person chooses not to listen to the priest's advice, then it's on his conscience.

MelCervini, yes, all religions are cults. Cult took on a bad connotation, but it's a valid word.
drawnman61, the Catholic Church's "wealth" is donated by the parishioners. All the trappings of the Vatican have been donated by artisans worldwide over the centuries. Also, the whole priest not marrying thing meant that the church would get a portion of their father's land (priests aren't allowed to acquire wealth).
The Church is one of the largest charities in the world. How 'bout before you guys bip off about the apparent wealth, go visit a church down in Grenada, and tell me how wealthy they are. Yes, the European churches are extravagent looking, but they've been worked on by local artisans for centuries.

If Jesus were real and returned today, what would he make of the church's obscene wealth?

You can criticize the Church for having expensive objects but if they didn't have expensive objects then the Church would be criticized for not appreciating beauty. You can criticize the church for not helping the poor enough, but it doesn't change the fact that the church surly helps the poor more than any critic of the church. Where do poor people and families in need line up around Christmas and Thanksgiving?

Jesus even says that it is okay that expensive ointment was used on him instead of being sold to the poor. He reminds us that there will always be poor.

So before you criticize the church you must ask yourself how much have you given to the poor.

@MelCervini

Actually, it is a religion.
Protestants however are more of a cult, since they distanced them from the catholic church because they didn't agree on some things.

But they're both derived from judaism, and completely ridiculous, so it's a moot point.
