In the areas where fracking is done, what will things be like (ground water, seismic, etc) 25 years from now ??? No one really knows, or can give any definitive answers, can they ? |

Ah yes, almightybob1. I do realize it usually takes longer, I was just stating that to keep the discussion going in case it didn't get approved.
And then even if it then did get approved, people could still talk about it. |

Sosueme, why is your initial reaction to ask about war/oil? There are other ways of producing/providing energy without using fossil fuels, or are you still in the last century? One of the major investors in the Gulf Wars/Afghanistan: Halliburton, one of the major investors in fracking: Halliburton. Oh yeah and what do we do with all the methane gas? Got an answer for that? And do you think it's OK to just extract all the gas from the Marcellus Shale and then come back in fifty years time and complain there is nowhere safe for people for live, no wildlife, no clean water? Maybe next time one of those wells in the Gulf of Mexico goes pop you should spend a little time on the nearest beach to get some perspective. |

Wind farms have been killing rare birds like falcons, hawks, eagles, vultures and condors.
True. They do kill a lot of birds.
The sound they make is awful
Not true. At least, not true of Whitelee Wind Farm, Europe's second largest wind farm and just a few miles from where I live. I've gone cycling in amongst the pylons quite a few times, they're very quiet until you get right up close. You certainly can't hear anything from more than a hundred yards or so.
It's quite unnerving actually, you can go and stand right under the blades and look up as they fly down towards you and look like they're going to take your head off, cool but a bit scary :P
But there are other big problems with over-reliance on wind. Chiefly that you can't rely on the wind. |

Here in North Texas, we have the Barnett Shale which is considered by most to have the largest potential natural gas production in the United States.
With over 100,000 leases for fracking currently listed, we are lucky that the shale sits several thousand feed below the aquifers and main sources of water so this "leakage" really isn't possible (unless the injections can travel against gravity upwards) - but here is a little story from the Dallas Observer to give you more willies on a UT Study that shows the greater dangers of fracking...

@madduck, we dont use fossil fuels simply because we can. The fact of the matter is we were stupid enough to design a world that runs off fossil fuels and non-renewable resources.............not such a great idea in hindsight but here we are now anyways. |

I saw the film Assland, as I like to call it, and then found a follow up video of him explaining something's such as the family whose water could be lit on fire was flammable BEFORE they started fracking, and he left that part out of his movie. Of course he's slanting the movie to fit his agenda.
Other things, the people idiodically sold their mineral rights for cash and have to accept that fact.
Go nuclear. That is all. |

I live in Ohio and they've recently had to stop fracking near me because we had a record 14 earthquakes in the past year. None were very major, but it was a giant increase in seismic activity for our area. |

@jamie76: You forget one CRITICAL issue: Wind Farms Don't Work All The Time! Every kilowatt of 'wind power' needs a BACKUP! So you pay once for the 'backup' and then pay TRIPLE the price for the 'wind power'.
Sanity would suggest: only pay for the 'backup' and save billions of dollars, BUT NO! |

Even the Kennedys wouldn't allow them on Cape Cod.
Fracking is not as dangerous as environuts would have you believe, they just hate oil and gas so much they'll say anything to end it's exploration. |

This. People are so knee-jerk when it comes to issues like this, for example Germany is currently phasing out all nuclear power thanks to fudgeashima, despite the fact that nuclear power has resulted in far less deaths and monetary damage per capita than coal and gas power generation. Yes, it's horrible when it goes really wrong like Chernobyl, but countless miners have been injured, or died as a result of their work, and the water table can get ruined as a result of those as well.
Like Arcval said, just regulate it with safety and environmental standards, and it's fine. |

wind farms don't make the water flammable. fracking does.
fracking is a form of oil production that in the past was considered too dangerous and costly to bother with. it is now being used out of desperation and because without folliwing the regs strictly, oil companies can rape it out of the land for less money.
the way it is being done now is terrible for the environment and yes wind farms can harm local animals but they do not leave the area filled with toxic chemicals. yes we need energy, no w do not need to wreck the place to make it.
