@Fancylad: this website needs work. It's incredibly easy to break the page when posting.

MacGuffin: "I think I'd made the mistake that, because you're gay, I somehow had you down as tolerant"

5Cats: "See @MacGuffin? EVERYBODY uses 'racial' profiles every single day!"<<<

Let me get this right, 5cats. So, because *I* drew a conclusion about Gerry's probable level of tolerance based on the fact he's stated he's *gay*, in your head that must mean that "everybody" uses racial profiles "every single day". Wouldn't that statement only hold true if the small sample that is me could be extrapolated to draw conclusions about everyone else on the planet's behaviour? And wouldn't it also only hold true if being gay were equivalent to being part of a race?

Honestly, the sheer lack of coherence in some of your, Gerry's and Crakr's comments beggars belief. The lack of intelligence and logic in your comments, and the unsupportable nature of the conclusions you draw reminds me of 5Cats

See @MacGuffin? EVERYBODY uses 'racial' profiles every single day!

I think the biggest oppressor of the black community is the black community.

I totally agree @Draculya! And who commits most of the crime against blacks? Other blacks, that's who!
So perhaps there's 5X as many black men in jail because they commit 5X as many crimes? Food for thought, eh?

wow this statistic is very alarming, the fact that such a small minority represents such a high user of food stamps is a horrible statistic for african americans, its almost double the average of other races

Draculya, I agree with your second comment.

For my own comment.. I think.. that maybe.. employers are so often hiring a lot of people of races other than Caucasian.. to show that they don't discriminate. Just saying.

Compare your opinion that there is no material racism in the USA today with your view that:

I'm a gay man who has been, more than once, the target of hate crimes. I've lived in places where it is illegal for me to exist.

"Illegal to *exist*"? Really? Did they vapourise you, or did you just not get caught?

Or have you lived in Saudi Arabia, perhaps? Because I can't find the US statute that makes it illegal to exist and be gay - show it to me, if *it* exists. If I were gay and reading your comments, I would be embarrassed that someone was misrepresenting my position in the way that you have done.

Talk about being a drama queen - "illegal to exist", FFS!! The only place it's been illegal to exist recently in the US is in the sights of George Zimmerman's gun if you're a black child.

I haven't said their isn't racism.

Yes you have:

Yes there is racial inequity in prison populations and people with educations. But you cannot assume that is due to racism. In my view it's more of a cultural problem.

...

As for "white privelage". A black man and I would start at the same salary at a Home Depot or any other company. Where's the oppression?

"United Negro College Fund is a private body" okay.. so is the KKK, are you okay with them?

Honestly, Gerry, the crap points you make aren't even worth commenting on, because they're so unbelievably stupid. If you really need someone to tell you the difference between a private organisation that engages in *legal* activities like helping under-represented groups like black women get a college degree, and a private organisation that engages in *illegal* activities like racially-motivated murder and gun-running, you're beyond debating with.

So you resort to name calling when you disagree with someone's opinion and can't make a logical case?

No, I resort to describing what you are - a sexist and racist - based on your opinions. I stand by how I've described you (and I doubt any sane person reading your comparison of the KKK to the United College Negro Fund above could disagree).

I think the biggest oppressor of the black community is the black community. They call each other names that we can't even type here, they perpetuate the stereotype of good uneducated, for nothing, criminal low-lifes at every opportunity. Even terms such as 'brother' create a class barrier by creating a them-and-us mentality.

"What about the other 32%?"

Not the Asians or the Jews, I'd wager. They're the ones paying for all the whites, black and latino's stamps.

@ faaaaq - yes, I have been. But up until the late 80s and early 90s it was still illegal in many states. Sodomy Laws.

@ everyone - I haven't said their isn't racism. Nor that it's always an easy road. But if we're holding out for universal acceptance we'll be holding out breath a long time.

There will always be people that hate other people. But I don't see it as an ingrained societal behavior anymore the way it used to be. That's all I'm saying.

Food for thought, white people account for 70% of the population, whereas black people account for 13%, so it's not really surprising to people with brains and the ability to do basic math. Those are two things the average cable news viewer does not possess however.

MacGuffin "you do just come across as a embittered sexist racist, angry at black people and women for daring to demand the same basic human rights as white males have enjoyed for a very long time"

So you resort to name calling when you disagree with someone's opinion and can't make a logical case? You must have studied at the Jessie Jackson School of LIBERAL ARTS.

As for your sobbing over "white privelage"... I'm a gay man who has been, more than once, the target of hate crimes. I've lived in places where it is illegal for me to exist. So I have some insight into what constitutes "Oppression" and what doesn't.

Are there racists...yes.
Is it institutionalized into a system of oppresion against People of Color?... No

I belive the black community needs to assess what is wrong within it's own community that 50% of their young men will not graduate, but it's not Whitey's Fault anymore.

@MacGuffin - so many points to cover, I'll be brief.

"United Negro College Fund is a private body" okay.. so is the KKK, are you okay with them? No? I don't see any differance. Each organization is dedicated to promoting the advancement of a person based on their skin color.

Your interation marriage arrest example: You had to go back 45 years to find and example of oppression. So how is that oppression TODAY ?

I already discussed earlier the dispropotionate prison populations. You provide no evidence of racism or oppression.

As for me being gay, I am still tolerant. I am happy to live beside/work beside people of other races and faiths. That does not mean I have to buy into every liberal biased dumb idea. There was a huge problem in this country. Those times have changed. Is there still a problem? Sure, but it is not an ingrained system of oppression.

Is this what percentage of the population gets them, or the demographics of who gets them? If it is the latter, then who gets the other 42%?
