However, if he had done so then it's much more likely that some people would have intervened, probably violently, than it was here.
The thing is, if someone had hit this woman, owing to the Bystander Effect it's almost certainly the case that no-one would have intervened in the way you're suggesting. We were just discussing the Kitty Genovese case in a another thread. There's good empirical evidence that people in groups simply don't get involved in emotive events they observe, unless those events affect them directly. |

Almost certainly true.
However, if he had done so then it's much more likely that some people would have intervened, probably violently, than it was here. There is a strong tendency towards a difference in public response, despite the bystander effect. A person from a group with higher social status (in this case, women) attacking a person from a group with lower social status (in this case, men) is very often not treated the same as the other way around. If the prevailing prejudice is strong enough, it will be normal to blame the person of inferior status anyway, so much so that them being abused is routinely seen as proof of their guilt. Which feminism has succeeded in doing to men, wherever feminism has enough power.
I'm optimistic though - there's movement towards sexual equality, despite feminism. |

I'm all for giving women a little more leeway, because they're not really built for hand to hand combat and so forth.. But sometimes people just need to be punched in the face.. This is a prime example of someone who is literally asking for a fist to the jaw so much, that gender is not an issue.. |

drawing conclusions about the rights and wrongs of hitting women in general based on the behaviour of one single woman just sounds risible.
So why are you doing it? Nobody else is. This is just serving as an example that illustrates how that particular piece of sexism is an anachronism that has no place in the modern world. It made some degree of sense in the context of rigid sexed roles in the past (which were neither universal nor anywhere near as clear-cut as Victorian and feminist sexism has made them out to be, but that's another argument). It makes no sense now.
So...what do you want? Sexual equality or such extreme superiority that women are free to abuse men at will without consequence? If the latter, do you base your rationalisastion on feminism ("women aren't responsible for themselves and men deserve abuse anyway") or the Victorian sexism that feminism is based on ("women are childlike")? |

That said it is becoming far too common where violence or mistreatment toward men is tolerated or dealt with with a slap on the wrist whereas even talk about violence toward women is taboo and results in uproar and drastic action. A woman punching a man is just as disgusting and intolerable as a man doing it to a woman. Punishment should be the same both ways not exaggerated one way and ignored the other. Women's rights, like so many special interests groups,has completely abandoned pursuit of equality for the pursuit of special treatment and a pedestal. We haven't even completely gotten rid of misogyny and already the scales are tipping to the side of misandry.

You do realize that assault can occur without physical contact? This woman demonstrated two them which is to forcefully take someones belongings against their will from their person and the second is to damage anothers property against their will such as throwing it into the water. In some places it is even legal to defend personal property by force. This is quite aside to the fact that she pushed the man into the water which is a direct physical assault. Pushing someone and punching them once (as opposed to battery) are equally damning in the eyes of the law. I don't think an appropriate reaction to any assault is to attack them back unless it is to protect oneself from continued assault and then only until safe.
As for all women you shouldn't take what people here or on the internet in general seriously. People say things just to be shocking. |
