This photo doesn't even scratch the surface of what's wrong with America and you can't hope to sum it up in one thread. America has a way of infecting the rest of the world with it's problems, so I sincerely hope they will learn. Sadly, I don't think they will be ready to listen till they are a third rate nation once again.

MacGuffin fails to see the UK is involved in both Iraq and Afganistan once again Europeans pick what to see and what not to. What would you expect from someone in the UK though they whine about human rights violations and not enacting our own socialist policies while using part of their taxes to support a privledged few not from their actions but from their name...Lol and they call us stupid!

Carol, thank you for responding to the thrust of my original post (didn't think you were reading, and felt like elaborating) - it's late here but I'll give it the time it deserves tomorrow.

... the whole idea behind america, is freedom, we break the rules there are consequences checks and ballances..

IAB is like america, MacGuffin is a douche (rule breaker) therefor needs consequences... i say we bomb her house.. AMERICAN STYLE.

So, where were those "checks and ballances" [sic] in the cases of the Blackwater mercenaries, the murders at Haditha and the sexual assault of Hope Steffey? Nobody served a day for any of those human rights abuses. And as for "bombing my house", isn't your pathetic threat just about as credible a threat as Jose Padilla allegedly made?

keep watching the board to see if anyone is arguing with you, you pretentious bitch. I'm laughing at you and going to bed.

Listen, if you fancy me just come out and say so; there's no need to pull my pigtails to express how you feel inside. Anyhoo, sweet dreams - enjoy your daytime nap.

Wow MacGuffin. Imagine if you weren't a complete pretentious bitch, somebody might find you interesting. Imagine if you thought you were eloquent, but you just ended up being a stuck up b.i.tch that nobody bothered to care about. Oh, wait, you are. Imagine if you weren't an idiot who assumed all Americans are the same, but you are. Don't mistake brevity for ignorance when it comes to posts. Trust me, nobody thinks you are any smarter because you made so many .

10) In an infamous case, Hope Steffey was arrested by deputies of the Stark County Sheriff's Department on 20th October 2006.

In custody, she was manhandled, beaten, had her clothes cut off and was strip searched by male officers, was handcuffed and thrown in a cell naked. Videos of her treatment exist on YouTube. It's hard to watch them and hear her screaming in terror without feeling a seething rage at the way US authorities treat US Citizens whom they have at their mercy.

The County settled a claim for damages out of court, but no charges were ever brought against the individual officers themselves, and no-one was fired.

I can't help but feel that Hope Steffey's ordeal stemmed directly from the other abuses that the US Government and its arms had been getting away in the years preceding this event. The thing about human rights abuses is that the countries that perpetrate them rarely stop at their own borders when it comes to the behaviour they get away

9) On July 15th 2010, human rights lawyer Lynne Stewart was sentenced by a US Court to ten years in Federal Prison. Her crime? – holding a press conference with the Reuters News agency, to highlight the case of her client accused of terrorism offences, Abdel Rahman.

Prosecutors alleged that Stewart had been duped into passing on a coded message by Rahman, even though no detail of what this message might have been or what its actual effect actually was, was ever presented in evidence.

This is a human rights lawyer, operating in country that supposedly prides itself on freedom of speech, being given a ten year stretch for *holding a press conference*.

For this 'crime' she was handed a sentence longer than that faced by all but one of the soldiers convicted in the Abu Ghraib scandal. There's something deeply wrong with a country that locks up lawyers for exercising free speech, whilst letting murderers, torturers and human rights abusers go free.

8) On September 16th 2007, mercenaries working for the US State Department and supplied by the 'private security firm' Blackwater shot and killed 17 Iraqi civilians in Baghdad's Nisour Square. Those killed included Iraqi Police Officers.

There had been several preceding incidents involving Blackwater mercenaries in the years leading up to this event, that should have brought the professionalism of the Blackwater mercenaries into question. E.g., Blackwater mercenary Andrew Moonen had killed a security guard of the Iraqi Vice President, Adel Abdul Mahd, on Christmas Eve 2006, and had subsequently been fired by Blackwater for "violating alcohol and firearm policy" – he shot Mahd whilst drunk, then claimed immunity and had been allowed to return to the US without being charged with murder. No charges were ever brought against any Blackwater personnel.

7) There have been several instances of US officials kidnapping the citizens of their allies, and/or kidnapping on their allies soil.

In 2009, the CIA Head of Station in Milan, Robert Lady, was sentenced in absentia by an Italian court to eight years' imprisonment, for his involvement in the kidnapping from Italian soil of Abu Omar. 23 other CIA officers were also given sentences in absentia by the same court. None of those convicted of these heinous offences has ever been handed over to serve their lawfully-applied sentences.

Canadian citizen Maher Arar was kidnapped from New York's JFK Airport in September 2002, and illegally rendered to Syria (a country that the present regime accuses of torture and repression of its own citizens). He was held for nearly a year by the Syrians, tortured, and ultimately released, because even the Syrians could see that he was innocent. During his detention, his family had no idea where he'd been 'disappeared' to, or what had become

6) The detention of US Citizen Jose Padilla in military custody, for a crime that was allegedly being planned for commission on US soil. There are meant to be strict limitations in law against the use of the US military against US civilians. Those same limitations are the reason why the US Military delayed intervening during Hurricane Katrina, until they were expressly authorised to do so. These limitations are intended to protect US Citizens against would-be totalitarian regimes, and democratically-elected governments against military coups.

5) The rendition, torture and subsequent long-term detention without trial of detainees. The most notorious and well-known example of this odious practice are the detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, though there are numerous other examples that are all the more egregious for being out of the public spotlight, such as the so-called 'Dark Prison' that the US maintains to this day at Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan, also known as Parwan Detention Facility. This facility is twice the size of Guantanamo Bay, now holding some 1700 prisoners compared to the 600 it held during the Bush era.

The abuse in US Military prisons in war zones isn't limited to foreign detainees, but also includes American citizens. For example, Donald Vance and Nathan Ertel, two contractors working for a private security firm in Iraq, were held, beaten and tortured by US soldiers in the maximum security prison at Camp Cropper just outside Baghdad for several months from April 2006, before being released without

4) The mass sexual exploitation of female federal prisoners at Tallahassee Federal Prison in Florida, which culminated in the shooting death of a Federal Agent at the prison when officers went to arrest the guards involved on June 21st 2006. As the victims of rape and exploitation involved were 'only prisoners', no guard who committed these sex crimes against American citizens on American soil served more than a year in prison, even though their actions had ultimately led directly to the death of DOJ Inspector General's Office Special Agent, William Sentner during the shootout during which one of their number was arrested. The guard being arrested who fired the fatal shot was killed in the shootout too.

You and me would be facing 'conspiracy' murder charges if we'd raped a group of women, and one of our number had subsequently killed a federal agent in a shootout pertaining to our collective arrest for the crime; why not these guys?
