Thursday, March 22, 2012 10:06:01 PM Just like the folks in the video probably got that airbag out of a wrecked car... You should always wear your seatbelt and sit as far back as possibly comfortable. I had a tierod break and lost control of a 07 vehicle with "modern" air bags and hit a tree headon at 65 mph and neither the driver or passenger airbags deployed |

Thursday, March 22, 2012 4:15:31 PM "An acquaintance of my sister - a petite woman - was riding with her husband when they had a minor accident. The bag went off, breaking her neck, and she died instantly. Just horrible." Oh god I am so screwed. |

Wednesday, March 21, 2012 6:40:38 PM Makes me wonder if they should be adjustable since a five foot, 100 pound woman gets the same treatment as a 6'4" 300 lb linebacker. Modern ones are often adjustable, at least at the more expensive end. Auto-adjusting in some cases, with sensors detecting things such as seat position, restraints used and even the weight of the person. That happened because of deaths, like your sister's acquaintance. The early models were calibrated for an average adult with an average seating position and not wearing a seatbelt, so they were wrong for probably most people. But they're still not safe for very small people, so children should always be in the back. |

Wednesday, March 21, 2012 3:40:14 PM I had a concussion and a burn on my face from an airbag. I think a plastic bit from the dashboard also hit me, I'll never know. Never saw it coming, was reading the newspaper in the passenger seat. :[ |

Wednesday, March 21, 2012 12:25:49 PM I hit a tree once at 5 mph. Meant to hit the brakes while parking though. It was only a bump, but the airbag deployed and broke my nose and gave me two black eyes. I lied and said I was defending a woman against a pack of rapists. |

Wednesday, March 21, 2012 6:14:04 AM Airbags put out somewhere between 1-2 TONS of force. The reason being is that it has to counteract you applying that much force in the opposite direction. A friend had an air bag go off at a low speed, he said it was like being punched in the face. I'm taking his word on it. |

Wednesday, March 21, 2012 6:13:24 AM "Seat belts? They kill more people than they save." Got any facts to back that up? Mine saved my life at the cost of a bit of bruising. |

Wednesday, March 21, 2012 3:30:35 AM Reminds me of a training video when I was in school on vehicle extrication. Launched a firefighter from a car because he forgot to disconnect the battery. Yet another reason to NOT sleep with your feet proppd up on the dashboard. |

Wednesday, March 21, 2012 2:36:24 AM Possible but i don't think it was one bag. Enclosed spaces do wonder with explosives.. As for that comment about terrorist using them, not really a good as a weapon... Powerful enough to cause some harm, detonating this in subway car wouldn't even break it's windows... Not enough oomph in that baggage to really do anything.. If it had, all minor road accidents would cause fatalities. |

Tuesday, March 20, 2012 8:35:22 PM I have had an airbag go off on me during an accident and it is faster than you know what's going on. It's like getting hit in the face with a rubber mallet, but better than flying out of the windshield. I also got rug burn on my forearms since I was holding steering wheel. |

Tuesday, March 20, 2012 8:30:26 PM @Angelmassb FTW! Literally what went through my mind at the moment of detonation was: "Al Qaeda. Airbags." ... then "Bag of gravel. Subway. Rush hour." So let me get this straight: even in countries where possession of explosives is illegal, there is a plentiful source of fairly powerful explosives already wired with electronic detonators? So all you need is a 12V battery, a relay and a mobile phone? How are we supposed to protect ourselves against that? If terrorists use them, what laws will we change? Can we ban airbags? Woah. BTW, that would make for a great car ejector seat.

Tuesday, March 20, 2012 7:51:29 PM NZBNR I don't think you know what terminal velocity is. Do you think it is the velocity at which you would be terminated? |

Tuesday, March 20, 2012 6:13:15 PM Would you rather go flying through the dashboard/windscreen at terminal velocity? |
