Thursday, March 15, 2012 3:58:40 AM Yes, frankii...keep thinking that, it's okay. Throwing your privacy out the window because there are a very small percentage of people out there who are bad people is good...after all, what do you have to hide? And, Draculya, they are trying to make it more common place for people to get their DNA tested...give people reason to go out and spend $100 on a test for something other than paternity testing. DNA sequencing can tell you what foods you may be allergic to, if you're predisposed to cancer, or even if you are going to benefit from a long life. Their aim, in the near future, is to give everyone a reason to want to send their DNA to a lab to get tested. |

Wednesday, March 14, 2012 9:34:26 PM The crude methodology displayed in this video was first developed by the LAPD. A primary reason O.J. enjoyed an extra decade of golf after having committed the unspeakable. |

Wednesday, March 14, 2012 3:21:14 PM Frankii: do you know how easy it is to place dna evidence on a crime scene? Especially when you are innocent, you don't care about your cigarette buds, but it is just something that can be put to good use. And yes, I know there is more evidence needed but still, it will either be a prove of you being there, or it will be a way for criminals to claim innocence. |

Wednesday, March 14, 2012 2:19:33 PM I just did this in a lab with my students a couple weeks ago. It's a pretty big hit with seventh graders. |

Wednesday, March 14, 2012 11:15:30 AM Works better with onion of kiwi fruit, you can get more biomass to extract DNA from. There's also no need for the food colouring; if you've got sufficient genetic material it's easier to see without it. |

Wednesday, March 14, 2012 11:06:49 AM ChainsawNbud I really don't see it (I'm from England btw) and I really don't see the harm. By that logic I shouldn't have to give my fingerprints when I get to America but I do and that's fine, I don't mind CCTV in public places either |

Wednesday, March 14, 2012 8:41:29 AM "Can anyone explain to me why people have such a great issue with governments getting hold of their DNA? It would help solve crimes and if you're not planning to commit one then what's the problem?" Because your DNA profile is not necessarily unique (no really) and because evidence contamination can land you in sing sing. |

Wednesday, March 14, 2012 5:13:09 AM Frankii, I don't know about where you're from, but where I'm from people are innocent until proven guilty. The government has no right to record my DNA "just in case" later on I decide to commit a crime. Your line of thinking is the first step on a slippery slope into a police state. |

Wednesday, March 14, 2012 3:50:12 AM @Samsquanch, very few people have actually had their DNA sequenced, but you can get your DNA checked for various markers that indicate propensity for health issues and trace your ancestry. I know of someone whose kid submitted his sample to a genealogy database and discovered that his dad donated sperm in college and that he (the son) consequently has several half siblings. All the other siblings that submitted their own data now now who their biological father is. Oops! |

Wednesday, March 14, 2012 3:15:44 AM So, the government is showing us how easy it is to do this. Next, they'll invent a little machine that you can buy for a small fee that you can sequence your own DNA at home...but, the average person won't be able to read their own sequence, so you can just upload the results, and bingo! In a couple days, you have your very own DNA results! And...more nefariously, the government has your DNA on file. Oh...and, I'd do her. |
