I always thought it was more a cliche than a reality, anyway. Our cats needed bathing once or twice and they didn't mind much.
I've just looked to see how much truth is in it and found the interesting suggestion that it's related to temperature - wild cats from hotter areas tend not to mind being in water and wild cats from colder areas tend to avoid anything more than drinking it. Maybe it's related to maintaining body temperature and has become hardwired on an instinctive level. |

My brother's cat Leo takes showers with him. It's the oddest thing- he says he's obsessed.
Friends of ours live way up in northern BC and found a feral cat with kittens. They adopted one that was hurt, and she was so attached to the son. She showered with him too and he brought her with them when they visited and she jumped in our hot-tub after him <3 |

When our family cat had kittens (lo-o-o-ong ago), we grabbed a couple and took them to the beach one summer day. They paddled around and had a blast in the water, attracting a lot of attention! Very unusual for the attraction to water to last to adulthood, tho.
Just rambling down memory lane... don't mind me. |
