Guess they should have chanted "Remember the Alamo," eh? That would have sparked some shared regional patriotism.

Context ya pricks. You can shout "Fire" all you want on the sidewalk, but do it in a crowded theater and it's no longer cool.

Chanting "USA" at a sporting event where the other team is predominately Mexican is racist. There's no other reason to chant that at a high-school basketball game in San Antonio.

I'm Texas-born, but the state continues to embarrass me occasionally.

The world has gone soft nowadays. People will get offended at anything. This reminds me of the story about a high school football game where students from the school that won held up a sign that said "You Mad Bro?" after the game, and the losing school cried racism.

...it's more embarrassing for the chanters, it's seen in Europe as naive jingoism, much like other unquestioning regimes around the world, also a little corny.

Chanting "USA" is not equivalent to Mexican-Americans chanting "Viva Mexico" or "Viva la Razza." I'll admit it seems strange to me to chant about a foreign country, but at the same time nearly every immigrant influx in America has had a transitional period where people were still proud of their old country while becoming assimilated Americans. This includes the Irish, Italians, Germans, etc. It is really just a way of showing pride in one's heritage. An American taking pride in their heritage is not the equivalent to a bunch of other americans implying you're not a true American because you came from somewhere else (or your parents did).

I suppose it would depend on their intent. However, "USA, USA!" is a pretty crummy racial slur.

I'm sure if the opposing team engaged in a chant of "viva Mexico" or even better, "viva la Raza" it would be lauded as a step toward more progressive cultural inclusion and tolerance. This is the type of sensationalism that stretches every white person's apathy regarding the constantly shifting definition of racism further and further toward the breaking point - keep it coming.

It's not "apparent," mr news anchor - it's ALLEGED - like when that black guy 'allegedly' shoots the court judge on camera? Yeah, THAT'S apparent.

"Disturbing" incident? Your 3 cherry-picked student interviewees expressing their having been shocked an appalled - that was disturbing.

Drawman, it was only a couple of years ago that we had the last world cup and everyone but their grandma had england flags on their houses, cars, clothes, everywhere. A fair few people in my area also have the union jack in their gardens.
TLDR- You're talking pants.

Welcome to our world. It's been like that for a few years in England. A foreigner flies their flag, they're patriotic. We are BARRED from flying ours by local government in case we offend those we have welcomed to live here.

@OpsAss13 Youʻre an idiot. Chanting "USA" is fine. Implying that the Americans youʻre playing against arenʻt Americans because theyʻre not white is racist. Stop making conservatives look stupid.

Because I recognize Glenn Beck's racist tendencies? Mkay

From the liberal dictionary:

Racist noun 'ray sist 1. Anyone who disagrees with a liberal. 2. See 1.

In general the chant is fine, immensely retarded, but not offensive. Normally its no different from Irish people singing "The Fields of Athenrye" or the English chanting "Rule Britannia" at a football match. In this case, however, it was clearly racist. Both teams were American so they were clearly chanting for one race against another, not for one country against another. If you can't see that then you should be living in a thoroughly padded room for your own safety.

Pretty <bleeping> pathetic when you are allowed to be more proud of being a foreigner in the US then being an American citizen!

It's not surprising that you'd think this is fine."
