I work at a movie theater. And trust me, I hate the prices just as much as you do. I don't make any commission off of the concessions, so don't act like I'm the one robbing you of your money. I'm not pocketing $2000 dollars a night. I make my crappy hourly wage like almost everybody else. Yelling at me will not make the prices go down. I'm not forcing you to buy the 8$ popcorn and the 5$ drink. Whew! Glad I got that out... |

BTW you can take any food/drinks you want into an AMC theater, at least in MD. I have openly walked in with sodas, lettuce wraps and cheesecake. |

"Legal" has nothing to do with moral or right vs wrong.
"Legal" is a legal status determined by lawmakers.
So I'll agree with you thieves and pirates out there. I do my own shenanigans and I sleep quite soundly with no guilty feelings. But I'm not rationalizing it. When I rip/burn it is steeling and no double-talk changes it. Own it guys.... we're all pirates together. {I'm a double pirate if you count butt-pirates.} |

Gerry: I could just be patient and see them on cable tv in 3 years, for free anyways, I don't burn them to dvd or sell them.
Like it or not movies, and other media, are part of our culture. If someone quotes part of that, like the "arrow to the knee" meme, and you have no idea what that means then you look stupid.

This is dumb. If I want to see a movie on the big screen but don't want to pay that much I just wait a month or to and go see it at the 2 dollar theater where a ticket, popcorn, and a drink is 5 bucks. |

i read somewhere once, and i'm not saying it is absolutely true, but the reason theaters over price their stuff is because for the first 2 months a movie is out, the theater gets none of the money from sales so most of their profit comes from concession. |

@Gerry it depends if you think it's 'illegal' or not.
If you copy and SELL (or rent) it, yes it's illegal. Unless you pay the owner the proper fee.
If you copy and view it yourself, not illegal.

I agree with plastinum, but I think the root of the problem is the relationship between film company and cinema:
they make nothing off of ticket sales
By gouging cinemas so hard, film companies are strongly discouraging customers from using cinemas. This is a poor business model because cinemas are extremely useful advertising for film companies. Films that go straight to video are very unlikely to make anywhere near as much profit and would require far more expensive advertising to promote, so cinemas are very useful to film companies. Film companies should be working with cinemas for mutual profit, not gouging them and forcing them to gouge a diminishing number of customers more and more (which diminishes the number further).
So yes, cinemas need to offer things people can't get at home, but film companies need to stop treating cinemas as parasites and start treating them as symbionts.

OF course the theaters whine they make nothing off of ticket sales and have to charge high prices on food items to stay in business. I think if theaters want to stay afloat then they should stop charging outrageous prices on mediocre snacks and do as some other theaters have done and offer premium seating with larger seats, alcohol, real food and other innovative things that would make the experience better and still justify the cost. Some theaters are almost restaurants with a movie screen! Why can't most theaters offer this kind of experience?
Theaters cannot seem to figure out that someone can go out and buy the Bluray or pay from home, watch the movie on their big screen tv and pop popcorn themselves for a fraction of the price of a movie and not have to deal with funky smells, sticky floors, rude people and other pitfalls of going to the theater..they need to offer services and an experience that people cannot get at home..if not the only incentive is seeing the flik earlier. |

The move industry always makes a fuss about ppl watching moves for free on the internet.
But then to watch a move in a theater, you pay more than if you bought the DVD, a kilo of unpopped corn, and 5 liters of soft drink...
So no wonder ppl dont go there as much and prefer to watch it at home.
Not even counting the ppl around talking, coughing, the fact that you cant smoke, cant easily take a bathroom break, and so on. |

Can't smoke in theaters, or guzzle alcohol, snacks way too expensive,loud patrons,cell phones. Screw it.Bootleg it for free and watch it at home. |
