If you're going to kill your baby to save them from something worse than death, why do it by drowning? Can you imagine the sounds? That's a pretty selfish and painful way to kill.

= evil.

It's np, I responded too quick I guess xD

"But that hardly looks to be the situation in this video."
All you can see in the video is a mother holding her child about to commit suicide. You know nothing about the situation. You seem to be agreeing with me now though, you have to know the situation to be able to judge.

@Lillian: Just about the only situation of a mother killing an infant daughter that I can think of that isn't evil would be one where the daughter was suffering a horrible and mortal disease or injury. If I had a child suffering from terminal cancer and he or she was in debilitating pain, I would consider euthanasia as a possible act of compassion.

But that hardly looks to be the situation in this video.

@Lillian: I think a lot of what I'm wrestling with, in this discussion, is the nature of Evil. It's a term that's seldom used in educated conversation because it smacks of religious fundamentalism. But I do think evil exists in this world as an entity unto itself.

Do I think the Chinese woman in this video is evil? No, I don't. Do I think her attempt to murder her own child is evil, whether done for reasons of insanity, stress, or character flaw? Absolutely.

I think of evil as some kind of pathological meme that can be passed from one person or society to another by evil acts. Example: The adult who was sexually abused as a child who then goes on to abuse children. Some people's lives are so full of evil acts it seems their only spirit of animation is evil itself. Others live normal or even admirable lives that are punctuated by evil acts, large or small.

Not sure, at the moment, where this is headed....

But why? You don't know her reasons. If she was trying to kill herself and her child because she was trying to avoid a situation *worse than death* and she tried every other possibility to avoid the situation, I honestly can't see how it's evil. Death isn't the worst thing that can happen to someone.

I can't judge him as evil without knowing. He could have had severe mental problems, which also wouldn't make him evil (it's something he has no control over, you can't be evil when it's something you have no control over imo).

As for your response to snuffy, I do feel the same. I did stop responding to you though (then figured I would continue again) because it seemed like we weren't going to come to any sort of agreement and would continue going in circles. I still doubt we will. I'll go back and respond to one thing though:

"After all, it sounds like the situation you've described did turn out acceptably."
The situation turned out fine because the mother got 100% custody and the father only got visitation if the mother approved of it. She had to give up pretty much everything she owned to the father to ensure he wouldn't try to get custody because she was so afraid of him raising her kids.

"All kidding aside, if such an act doesn't strike you as evil, what does?"

I can't see something as evil without knowing the intent. What you just mentioned was similar to a situation I heard recently from a place not far from me.

Father looses custody of his children through divorce. I have no idea why he has no custody, but he does have visitation. He goes for his normal visitation, but locks the person who went with him outside. He then proceeds to kill his children (maybe his ex-wife too? I can't remember but probably) and then himself.

My first reaction was the obvious reaction, that the situation was absolutely horrible and it's a tragic loss.

Then I thought about it, "I wonder what brought him to do that?". If it's simply because he doesn't have custody of his kids, then yes it was an evil act. But I have no way of knowing his reasons. Maybe he knew his kids were being severely abused by his ex-wife. I can't judge him as ev

(1) Lillian, I admire your ability to discuss every topic under the Sun dispassionately and intelligently. You are mature beyond your 20-something years. Truly, if we were co-judges on a case of a parent murdering a child, I'd probably recuse myself and put my faith in you. A mother or father murdering their own child is a hot-button topic for me that affects me viscerally. I have a hard time *not* responding emotionally.

(2) Sorry, Snuffy, but it's a major part of what we do on this site: discuss controversial topics, preferably without rancor or personal attacks. I don't always live up to that standard (your Holocaust charge, albeit a troll, really rankled me); but I like to try and I get a lot of neural stimulation from most of these discussions. I hope Lillian feels the same.

@Lillian: I'm wondering if I've gotten under your skin because I'm struggling to imagine the scenario you're signing up for.

Local News Anchor: "In a horrific act of violence tonight, a Philadelphia father blew the head off his 5-month old infant son with his shotgun before taking his own life."

Cut to clip of neighbor, Lillian Dulci: "Let's not be so judgmental. He was a good father going through a rough time."

All kidding aside, if such an act doesn't strike you as evil, what does?

Would you be saying, in that situation, "He *could* be a good father. And I won't condemn his actions until we know the circumstances."?

Yes.

@Draculya: I have to ask this because I think a lot of people are being affected by the obvious distress of the mother in this video (which is painful to watch, admittedly).

Let's say a father comes home from work, takes his shotgun out of his pickup, walks into the house, and then blows the head off his 5-month-old boy sleeping in the crib before turning the gun on himself.

We'd have the same situation as what this mother was attempting: murder-suicide by parent.

Would you be saying, in that situation, "He *could* be a good father. And I won't condemn his actions until we know the circumstances."?

If it's different, how so?
