So that's how it happened, the Dutch suck at driving, pay a huge amount for gasoline, and couldn't pay their bills.

That's not progress, that's slipping back into 2nd world status.

Long term, I disagree. When oil gets too expensive within the next 20 years, the Dutch will be fine given there's bike paths everywhere, and the tram and train systems have to be seen to be believed. The US, however, won't be fine. That's why Obama's trying to kickstart long distance high speed electrified rail projects. Southwest can't last forever you know.

Lived in Utrecht for two years, the cycling was great. Before long I was balancing two cases of Grolsch on the back.

"The Netherlands has the highest amount of cyclists in the world"? I don't think so chum, I think China has far more.

"Buiadh: Why would I want to see things from a eurocentric liberal socialist viewpoint, that hates America and is jealous of our liberties, economic power and prosperity ?

That sounds like a miserable viewpoint to have."

CrakrJak, sometimes I doubt my view of many humans as utterly biased and incapable of impartial thought. You always remove those doubts.

Lived there for 8 years. Not gonna lie, it was pretty awesome.

So that's how it happened, the Dutch suck at driving, pay a huge amount for gasoline, and couldn't pay their bills. That's not progress, that's slipping back into 2nd world status.

Wow. You can't help yourself, can you Crakrjak?

It's because they have no mountains. If I tried to cycle here, the average slope would be like 2:3.

Ive lived in Amsterdam for the last two years, and it is so awesome to be able to cycle everywhere. Ive spent pretty much zero cash on gas and public transport since ive been here.

plus there are heaps of hot girls on bikes to look at.

The ironic part is, as a libertarian, I am not a fan of what this country has done in the past 20-30 years. And I agree, we need to stop being so condescending. However, I am of the opinion that Europeans need to stop acting like they live in a perfect society and face the reality that they are in as much crap as we are in currently. And plus we did go to the moon which is pretty badass...

@alibi19: "Sorry, us Americans can't hear your pretentious drawl over the sound of our flag on the moon."

Please. "My dad can beat up your dad."

People like you are why the rest of the world thinks Americans are arrogant douches... because we are, apparently.

CrakrJak "So that's how it happened, the Dutch suck at driving, pay a huge amount for gasoline, and couldn't pay their bills. That's not progress, that's slipping back into 2nd world status."

It seems like they just made a logical choice based on the situation of their economy at the time.

It's much more reasonable to do that than to base your entire infrastructure on the idea that gas will be cheap forever, and then to go into debt by exerting your military and political might to keep gas cheap.

CrakrJak, i love your comments..
I propose you come over to europe once to see the second world over here. Visit the netherlands, germany, france, eventually Luxemburg. Look at the people, talk to them (most of them are able to talk english as a second or third language), ask them what they earn for their living, what their social security includes,
who pays their pensions, whether they are guaranteed by the state or some multinational can take them away, who pays for the doctor if they get ill, who pays in case they get fired, whether they have to drive a bicycle or wether they like to do it...
Take some pictures, go back to the US, look at your first world country, how the lower 20% are treated...
No, don't do that, stay at home, on your couch, in front of TV and internet, write some mails... (like i do ;)
Greetings from Luxemburg
