Why are they banning something that's already illegal? So either they were allowing illegal stuff on their website, or what they are banning is not illegal. It's a paradox!
No, it's politics.
Reddit has always banned anything illegal. They've called the police in as well. Their previous policy was that they wouldn't ban anything legal even if it was offensive, i.e. freedom of speech to the limit of the law.
What has happened now is that adverse publicity has resulted in reddit banning some things that are legal, without really defining what is banned (in part because censorship is usually hard to define clearly).
Of course, this means that in time anything that offends anyone with enough political power (including media attention, as that is political power) will be banned, regardless of the legal status of the material. Free speech isn't a pick 'n' mix thing - either you allow offensive (but legal) speech or you don't. |

merely hotlinking or pointing to a site is one loopholes that sites use to get out of trouble (for instance, sites that use megaupload, mediafire, etc to host pirated content)...that's pretty much crashing down now so reddit are just covering their asses
chances are it's not going to make much of a difference but saying you're doing something nearly covers you better legally than doing it without screaming to the world that you're doing it |

They should be... are those illegal (or is reddit banning them)? Technically there's no difference between looking at a sexual sketch of an adult, or of a child. Both are just ink on a paper. Isn't hentai featuring minors at least somewhat common? I don't think that's illegal o_O If it gives someone an outlet for this disgusting thoughts toward children, without ever harming an actual child, then I don't see the problem with it... |

I love moronic news articles like this. Reddit has high traffic, some users on reddit shared child porn, therefor all traffic to reddit is about child porn!
Don't knock them too bad guys, about 80% of IABs material comes from there. |

As I understand it, in Spain the age of consent is 13, so is it okay since they are old enough to consent to the act. Or is it 'child' porn because a consentual act was photographed?
Just stirring up debate... I think child porn is sick. |

I /think/ what they're banning isn't technically child porn, but exposing (i.e. bikini, cleavage, or anything with any vauge hint at sexuality) jailbait pictures. I'm sure some child-porn slipped through (probably a lot more got through recently) so they're closing those places so that the easily fooled / unknowledgable people (politicians) will think that something is actually happening. |

Good old use. Where you can drive and kill someone with a vehicle at 16, but cant have a family till 18 or drink with friends until 21.

Interestingly, most of the world's age of consent is 16. Some are much lower. Only a few countries and some US states have set it as high as 18. |

The age of consent, or when you become an adult, varies from country to country so who's standard do you use when judging if it's a "minor" or not?
Is it still child-porn if the legal "age of consent" is under 18? |

How many offending images does it take to get a subreddit shut? Now you'll be wondering if you can post a picture of a girl because "Can I post this photo of a cute girl? I don’t think she looks under 18, but what if Reddit disagrees?" Reddit clearly states that this blanket ban is because its “previous policy to deal with [child porn] on a case by case basis has become unsustainable.” In other words, Reddit is now so popular that it cannot practically afford its members the right to free speech. This is normal for large communities, but it does mean that Reddit will now steadily trend towards moralism, bureaucracy, and conservatism. With “suggestive content” now out of the way, what’s next? Will /r/Trees and /r/Cannabis, two subreddits dedicated to the smoking, growing, sourcing, and general championing of illegal drugs, be allowed to stay? [post 2/3] |

In other words, Reddit is aware that this is the beginning of the end for free speech, and it has no choice in the matter. Looking at what reddit banned (i.e. jailbait) isn't actually illegal. For it to be 'Child Pornography' a work must be sexually explicit or obscene. Obviously the definition of “sexually explicit” is subjective, which leads to this being a very gray area of the law. All of the banned subreddits fall into this gray area. Anime/Manga that depict minors in such a way is one of these grey areas. We should ask now what grey area will be next to go? Marijuana? File Sharing? I mean, /r/picsofdeadkids is (or was when I last looked) is still up, as is /r/beatingwomen. What will happen if reddit recieves apparantly underage looking boys/girls on their 18+ porn boards? Will they get shut down? [long/multi-post coming up] |
