This isn't going to make him masculine. It's just going to make him hate his parents.

to the last several of you who qualify this as legitimate discipline, you miss the point. first off, you have no idea how long that kid was even out in the cold. second, regardless of whether or not he was in "danger" there are better ways of teaching your child a lesson or making them "do something they don't want to do." really? please. try to rationalize a little more why don't you. if someone wants to treat a child like this, fine. i have no right to tell you how to raise your child. but i do know an a*shole when i see one. and if you justify this behavior, you're an idiot. period.

Russian style parenting=best parenting for all cultures! :P I see 2 things wrong with this though: the "masculine" part. I'd say make all genders do this to toughen up a bit. But that leads to the second: making him run in underwear is a bit creepy. Pedo bear is having a hell of a time right now :P

This is a valid way to teach your child "In life, you're going to have to do things that you don't want to do, even when you don't understand why, but they will make you stronger."

Now, please, the majority of you who appear to disapprove, give me a reason why EXACTLY this NECESSARILY qualifies as Bad Parenting......

I'm surprised at how many people are so upset by this. I probably wouldn't do this to my own kid, but it's pretty obvious that the boy wasn't even close to being in any danger. He was whining at the discomfort, just like any kid whines when he does something he doesn't want to (which is practically ALL THE TIME if he has responsible parents.) He probably is (or will be) proud of himself for rising to his parents' challenge. Just because a child is disciplined in ways we're not familiar with doesn't mean he's being abused or going to be an unhappy adult. Chill the F*ck out.

I think IAB needs to create a new category: Bad Parenting. It seems to be quite common on the site today.

@Scuzoid, it depends on the person. I've been in Chicago all my life, where we're well known to have all four seasons in one day. So far this is one of the best (read: mildest) winters in my memory, and I'm still freezing. My body hates the cold and the snow as well as the scorchingly hot summers, and I'm moving somewhere more temperate as soon as I graduate.

Don't care whether or not it's abusive. It's idiotic. I grew up and lived up till 22 in one of the most temperate parts of the US where winters were rarely below 40 and summers were rarely above 90. Then just because the human body is fully capable of it, acclimatized to a winter's 20 and below in a couple of weeks and summer's of 110 and above. Every year. For about seven years straight just out of sheer luck with my billets.

You guys are just jealous because his child is going to grow up an important business man with mad kung fu skills and your children will have to conform to a job at Mickey D's flipping burgers. That or prostitution/porn.

If that kid stopped whining and started running, he'd warm up a lot quicker!

Thats fascinating. If the kid ran, he'd realise he'd warm up and not feel cold. Keepign moving etc. Its almost a practical science lesson about the human body. Not sure a 5 year old needs to learn it.

I don't think it's a reccomended parenting technique but I doubt it'll do him any harm - especially as you see him laughing at the end when they get home.

When I think about the mental things my parents made me do as a kid, this would probably be on par!

It'd be abuse if they didn't make sure he warmed up properly and he caught hyperthermia.
