Sunday, January 29, 2012 7:07:56 AM Squrlz4Sale, that actually makes a lot of sense. I've always thought along similar lines of that, you put it a lot better than I could have though. |

Saturday, January 28, 2012 1:56:40 PM When I was a college student, I stayed on campus one summer working. Living in the same dorm was a guy who'd grown up on a farm in the Midwest. The school was in upstate New York, with a lot of rich kids from NYC. So this Midwesterner was viewed by everyone as something of a bumpkin. Anyway, after we went fishing together one Saturday, we were cleaning the catch on the porch of the dorm. At one point, I took a number of the fish heads and put one partly in another, partly in another, et cetera, as a joke. Kind of a "big fish eats the little fish" thing. This farm boy took one look and scolded me, saying, "That's not right--you don't play with dead animals that way." I was taken aback, but he was absolutely right. With all his time on the farm among pigs, chickens, cows, and slaughtering, he had a much better sense of the subject than I did. By contrast, I was just an ignorant kid from the suburbs of Connecticut. |

Saturday, January 28, 2012 12:56:11 PM @Xelous: I think so, personally. This certainly isn't a big deal that I get worked up about. But I think there's a reason adults in almost every culture lecture children not to to play with their food: If it's plant-based food, it's disrespectful of the work of those who grew and harvested it, and of those who don't have enough to eat. If it's animal-based food, it's all of the above, with the addition of being disrespectful to the memory of the animal that gave its life. This is one of the things that's always bothered me about those "Epic Meal Time" videos. Of course, artistic presentations, such as the whimsical garnishing of vegetables and the elaborate artistic fruit carving of the Thais, are a different matter altogether and convey no disrespect whatsoever; quite the opposite. |
