the forgot plastic, i forget what they were going for, but they left it in a beaker over night, a cat got in the lab, knocked it over, the beaker broke, but the contents didn't. the stuff had to catalyze first but they never left it. |

In a sense, none of them were accidental because the key point was someone seeing it and thinking "hmm, what's happening there and can it be made useful or profitable?"
For example, people had accidentally let bacteria cultures go mouldly before Fleming did. The key difference was that he didn't just clean out the mouldy petri dishes and start again.
Although you could argue that penicillin was accidentally discovered at least as far back as ancient Greece, as it was known at least that far back that a poultice made with mouldy bread would reduce the chance of a wound becoming infected. |

I thought the microwave one was only an urban legend/rumor.
And I thought the metal Slinkys were used as short-wave radio antenna where the soldiers would toss the Slinky over the treetops to get a signal.
