Who's rights did she violate? Who did she harm or steal from?
The law is bullshi.t

bedbugsbite,
"When I was 12 I gave myself a home-made tattoo . It was reckless and stupid and caused me a lot of grief. So, at least she took him to a professional before he did something stupid."

So? With that logic the mom should take him to a hooker before he gets some girl pregnant. He's freakin' 10! His body isn't done forming yet. He need boundaries and limits set for him. You don't indulge a child to do permanent poo like this. When he's an adult fine, but not a 10 year old.

Can't help but agree with Squrlz4Sale and CrakrJak here... If she got away with this there'd be a problem once some dumbass parent decides to tattoo something stupid on their kids.

If he got the tattoo from the professional I would think it would be the professionals duty to know the laws that apply to his business and should of refused service and informed the mother it was against the law. Either way no one should be in jail because of this. Due too the nature of the tattoo I doubt he will ever regret getting it but in the future he may wish for it too have been in a more concealed location, only time will tell.

At the surface it seems simple case of wtf, wait until your at least 16 to get a tattoo and parental permission. The boy could have gotten an infection, is too young to comprehend that he will have that tattoo FOREVER, ect. So many reasons to say the mother should not have allowed it. Neither should the tattoo artist. But should she be arrested? No. Sorry but there is NO malicious thought behind her rational, no likelihood of her 're-offending', and no real victim. I know you will say that the boy was the victim, but he asked for it. When I was 12 I gave myself a home-made tattoo . It was reckless and stupid and caused me a lot of grief. So, at least she took him to a professional before he did something stupid. Sometimes you have to let things like this slide in order to respect freedoms. Now, if it was an offensive or religious symbol it would be a different scenario because it implies a belief at an age that is too young to comprehend it independently.

cityncolour: Minors have several state protection laws, for their own good.

I wonder how you'd feel if a Nazi Skinhead family had their child tattooed with a swastika or SS lighting bolts, or something equally offensive ?

It's rare that I ever agree with Steelgrid, but he's right here.

@cityncolour: My goodness, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today.

States make laws that supercede parental rights to protect minors from parents that are not exhibiting common sense.

Want to raise your child in total ignorance, with no schooling? Sorry, not allowed. Want to refuse basic medical care for your child for a treatable illness, like diabetes? Also not allowed.

Wanna take your child into a tattoo parlor and get the words "F@CK AUTHORITY" tattooed across his forehead--even if both you and he think it's a great idea?

Well, I'm going to have to side with the state on that one and say that also shouldn't be allowed.

@faustsshadow
why do you think she had to go to "some kitchen wizard hack?" i'll tell you why, because a stupid law prevented her from being able to take him to a licensed artist because no one would do it for fear of losing their entire practice. what harm would it have done to ANYONE. the kid wanted it, the mother approved. that should have been the end of it. who the f*ck is anyone to say what is moral for anyone else if it's a personal decision? this country has a SERIOUS god complex.

@Steelgrid
oh... so you're just a blatant hypocrite? not to mention an idiot. i didn't need a law to tell me not to get a bunch of stupid tattoos in my youth. i'm almost 30 now and i have 6 with plans for many more. so needless to say i wont be wasting my money on laser removal. maybe we should just make a law that we throw dumb f*cks like yourself in the bottom of a river to weed out the weak, instead of making a bunch of laws telling us what we can and can't do to our own bodies.

I knew a lady that let her 9 yo get a tattoo. personally i don't see anything wrong w it if he gets older he can have it removed and i don't think he will want to in the future anyway considering what it represents. its not trashy or vulgar and he didn't suffer any reaction or infection to the tattoo people need to stop being so uptight. And that law is bull because i received my first tattoo at a legit tattoo parlor when i was 16

I agree with the law. Non tats till 18.

Too bad that didnt stop me. I learned how to make a tattoo machine pretty early in my teens, so naturally I had alot of stupid tattoos.

LASERS FTW!!!!

"Jahquan"? Why would you want to name your kid something that people will instantly identify (rightly or wrongly) as ghetto/welfare/gangland black before they even see him?
"Dis mah sisters Shawanda and Leshonna..." That's not culture; it's just labeling someone.

Yeah, wtf mom?

Let the kid get a tattoo about his sib when he's older and can make decisions for himself. Maybe he'll go to a real artist instead of some guy who learned tattooing in prison from a correspondence course.

Tattooing a little kid...sheesh.
