It can be done already in a nuclear reactor. It takes hours and thousands of dollars to make a fraction of a cent of gold.

"You forgot about the law of equivalent exchange"

You forgot what that even means.

The equivalent exchange is the Mercury itself. But you add in the labor, and the tools it takes to achieve this, and you are going to actually pay out MORE than the gold is worth in the end. The only true means of doing this accurately, is in a centrifuge, which I doubt any group is going to let you dump mercury in their centrifuges for your own profit. Especially when we are making nukes in them.

$.00000000000000000000000175 Danagamer. Still pretty valuable for an atom!

It's been done before, you'd spend much more money during the process than what you'd inevitably yield.

Spare protons can be used to craft an attractive container for potpourri or other household nick-nacks

And then take those excess protons and put them together and taser them (to create electrons)!

You'd be mad rich!

"Why not just add a proton to Iridium and get platinum ?

Hehehehe."

You do know Iridium is like 1000x more rare than platinum, right?

why dont just fuse hydrogen directly into gold ...you get lots and lots of energy...+gold...and hydrogen is the common "material" in the universe...so its free

LazyMe: That's because mercury is a byproduct of gold and ore mining as well as fossil fuels. About the only 'natural' source of mercury is methylmercury in our oceans that gets into our seafood.

It would be unwise to go on a tuna only diet. Source

CORRECTION, how to get 981.9532 grams of gold.
1000grams Hg /(200.59 g/mol) *196.97(g/mol). Assuming you meant to make gold in a stable form with the correct number of neutrons.

I was going to say that I'd rather not do all that work, just take off 1 proton, and then sell the resultant mass of heavy gold isotopes before it had a chance to decay to less than 985 grams.

... except to do that I had to find the isotopic composition of naturally occurring mercury, which wasn't on wikipedia.

And at a removal rate of one proton per second, it will only take longer than the universe has been around for.
And @carmium, the neutron doesn't necessarily have to go anywhere,it might as well stay to net some more "Gold" mass.

It's trollscience. I'm usually one for over-thinking but if everyone is trying to point out how the "information" is flawed or impossible then you've missed the point.

I guess we're assuming the neutron in question gets bored without his proton friend and goes away. Of course, we call this neutron radiation and it's generally not good for people.

People also forget the amount of energy it takes to do this cost more then the amount of gold you get
