OK OK its convenient, it's free, it's just too damn tempting to turn down. My only point is that I find it just a little hard to believe that nobody feels even remotely, somewhere in the back of their mind, that pirating music movies games etc. is just even little devious.

I mean hey, I do it all the time. I don't lose any sleep over it, I guess I'm just callous like that. Though I've never deluded myself on the nefarious nature of it.

I guess that's all I really want, I just want everyone to at least acknowledge were all bad boys and girls.

@Yield

Problem is, you view the bridge as the only means to cross, so in your mind, that is the only way and if you travel between the islands, you are stealing.

What ive done is build boats, cheap boats, and alot of them. I set them in the water and people share them to get back and forth. Most people get tired of rowing and eventually pay your toll, but until then, they got my boats.

So who would you be to say I cant cross the water by boat?

If I built a bridge between two islands and asked that you pay a toll each time you cross it, few people could argue my reasons for doing so. As I had gone through considerable expense building and maintaining it as such.

Then someone realizes they could use my bridge for free, its OK in their mind because they are only 'using' it, not 'stealing' it. after all, I still have my bridge. This idea quickly catches on and soon no one is paying a toll. I abandon my bridge, seeing no reason to maintain costly repairs. the whole purpose of building a bridge in the first place is rendered obsolete because somebody decided to redefine the concept of what it is to steal.

I'm pretty sure the Swedish translations are a coincidence.

scfan: I had about 30+ cassette tapes filled with music and albums I did not buy. I borrowed them and recorded them for my personal use. ....

That's what I came to say too.

Actually that would still have been a problem then. You were still infringing copyright. It was just completely unenforceable then (as opposed to mostly unenforceable now).

if people were sold these "intellectual properties" as a REASONABLE price, people would not risk going to jail to "infringe copyrights."

^this. I buy things that are reasonably priced, but when I'm having to pay over $30 for a movie, something is wrong. Also, it's up to the recording/movie industry to keep up with technology. Their methods of distribution are archaic, and they need to get with the times. I understand that intellectual property has value, I just think they attribute too much value, especially when the majority of movies made today are remakes of old movies. There is not much originality valued in Hollywood, they sit on original scripts so they can make another remake of "The Thing."

@Samsquanch, @YIELD_TO_ME No it's not stealing. It's copyright infringement.

There is a big difference between taking something outright and making a copy of it.

For one, the person who created it still has it.

Yield...yes, it is stealing, but it's a Robin Hood-esque stealing. The industries make loads of money off other people's intellectual property.
Musicians make very little from sales of CDs. Even current methods, like iTunes don't give the appropriate amount of money to the artist. It all goes to the fat cats who get rich off other people's works.
Movies make their entire profits back with the theatrical releases. DVD sales are gravy for distributors, and quite often, the artists who made the movie get very very little for the sales.
Television shows are backed by advertisers, so after their initial run, it's the distributors who gain from the syndication of the episodes.
Most artists don't do it for the money, but the love of the art.

The main difference now is I do not know the people I borrowed them from. Once other thought: Many of the music I have downloaded, I paid for already. Why should I pay again?

what's the real issue here? if people were sold these "intellectual properties" as a REASONABLE price, people would not risk going to jail to "infringe copyrights." the fact of the matter is, the same people that are crying about piracy are the same ones who profited from it. and assuming that because someone who downloads something illegally would have spent their money on if they couldn't have gotten it for free is ludicrous. the entertainment industries have spent a lifetime cornering the market and f*cking the consumer in the ass. well, the consumer has found a way to fight back. it's time for them to start playing by our rules. evolution, not oppression. it's time to realize that the world of the 20th century is not the same anymore. it's the 21st century and the people will not be walked on anymore. if not, f*ck it. i don't care. i don't need hollywood to "entertain" me, and the state of the "music" industry is laughable. good r

Well I download as much pirated crap as the next guy, but isn't it the least we can do to simply acknowledge that it 'is in fact' stealing?

I have a hard time believing that anybody could really truly believe otherwise.

Usually it is people without the capacity to produce intellectual property that cannot understand it's worth.

@Gerry1of1 - Um...actually it's a little more accurate then you think, in a way you're both right really.

To be fair half the stuff hollywood comes out with is unworthy of piracy. Who would want to steal garbage? My SSDs can only take so many write cycles, and the price of disk storage is so high these days... just not worth downloading crap.

All they have to do is lower their standards a bit, and pow! Problem solved.

Bravo!

Personally I never build Hollywood, it's useless unless you want a cultural victory.

Um.... not actually acurate, is it.
Edison had a patent on the camera.
They moved to california for the weather and cheep land.
No one pirated anything.
Back then, you had to submit a copy of your copywrited material on paper so they acually had to print a copy of each film on paper. These archives are what many of the restored old films are remastered from.

Anyway... you bought the camera from edison and no piracy involved.

I think he got his translation all wrong. It's SOPA PIPA = sopa pilla in Spanish, which translates to "soupy pillow", which is actually a wonderful Mexican dessert of fried bread, honey, and sugar, and not (contrary to popular belief) some disgusting thing you might find in the corner of a meth den. Goofing aside, this rant is ridiculous. As much as I think it's a good thing that the two bills are less likely to get through, it's not because of anything REMOTELY close to what this rant is spewing forth. Things like this do more harm to a cause than good.
