@Lardcarcass: Operation Rolling Thunder Was the tactical bombing of North Vietnam's infrastructure.
Operation Arc Light Was the Strategic bombing campaign against their supply lines into the South. The "Ho Chi Minh Trail" eh?
Rolling Thunder was a devistating success!
Arc Light? Dismal failure.
Yet at the time the opposite was the "official" assessment. The USA 'had intelligence' that ArcLight was wiping out the Ho Chi Minh Trail, and that Rolling Thunder wasn't doing much at all.
In reality RT had brought Nort Vietnam to it's knees, while AL missed the target a good 90% of the time.
History, go figure! |

As for #2: it's a well documented fact (since the fall of the Soviet Union) that Stalin had every intention and was actively preparing to invade the minute the 'peace treaty' wore off.
This is my "area of expertise" I've read a LOT about The Russian Campaign and it's causes.

I totally agree @xiquiripat! The Soviets really got whupped! American never actually tried to "win" in Vietnam, they just wanted to cycle troops into combat.

To answer my own question, there were multple and complex reasons; politics, casualties, China etc. |

How is the Vietnam War a bigger blunder than the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan? Only one of these led to the collapse of a super-power and the dissolution of a massive empire. No points for guessing which one. |

2)How exactly? Stalin not too long ago had his army pushed out of Finland no thanks in part to that great purge of his. |

vv Agreed @Batmanners & @MrPeabody! There are tons of battles that could easily make the top 10 worst list.
Quite true @red raven, those two battles were really small potatoes in a global view. The USA losing Corregidor was just as bad, eh? |

Numbers 1, 2 and 8 weren't all that bad, really.
#1: Germany HAD TO attack Russian before July 41 or else Stalin would have invaded Germany.
#2: Vietman was a battle in the Cold War. The USA lost the battle, it's true, but they won the War! There was a very real danger that the Soviet Union would roll across Germany, and possibly the rest of Europe, in the 60's and 70's, don't forget that! Vietnam gave the USA a place to battle-train it's troops and test equipment & tactics. When the Soviets tried that (In Afghanistan, just a few years after Vietnam ended) their troops and equipment were found to be disasterously bad.
#8: The reason it's famous is because it was by accident, eh? This sort of charge happened in battles of that era. IF the Light Brigade had been properly supported, it might even have worked! But by then all the other troops were withdrawing, so it was doomed. |

#1 Kublai Khan's attack on Japan, resulting in the loss of that largest naval fleet ever assembled, and speculatively starting the downfall of the largest empire ever.
If he had succeeded it is possible that all of Eurasia would have been under control of the Mongol empire, meaning all of world history would be different. (my speculation) |

Where the Vietnam War saw more deaths, it was not as crushing a defeat as Napoleon's. |
