@CrakrJak: Considering how the market tanked, and how much enjoyment I've gotten out of my collection, plus the return I've gotten selling the cards, I'd say I'm WAY on the plus side compared to where I'd most likely be if I invested it in the stock market.

Anyways, your problem is with addiction when it gets to the point where you're getting yourself into trouble, so you need to stop putting the blame on everything else, and deal with the real problem.

Also, comparing M:tG to tobacco is patently absurd. Tobacco has chemicals in it that cause *physical* addiction. That's a HUGE difference.

And let me restate my previous point so you can understand it: there is nothing *inherently* evil about having fun. I thought you'd recognize what I was implying.

By your logic, anything addictive is evil, and anything fun can be addictive, therefore fun things are evil.

That is highly subjective. one person's 'fun' can be another man's evil.

Then all one has to do is clarify it with "There is nothing evil about having fun that causes no quantifiable harm to others".

I have no problem saying I'm addicted to Pokemon. I've played literally every Pokemon video game ever released, and plan to continue that pattern for the foreseeable future. Pokemon Black is in my DS as I type this. I used to play the trading card game, but quit when WotC tried to kill it and never managed to pick it back up again. I've watched every episode of the anime.

And if anything, Pokemon is a positive influence in my life. I actually met my lover due to our mutual love of the games. And we talk about them regularly to this day. And if I sometime decide to give it all up forever, I won't regret a dime I've spent on it--the series gave me a lot of entertainment for a long time. Who can ask for more from a hobby?

but casinos, breweries and tobacco manufacturers get rich because they get their customers hooked. MTG and Pokemon are no different in that regard.

Booz and tobacco = chemical dependency

that's decidedly different from pokemon
if you want to call it an addiction then it's a mental dependency which again can happen with literally everything people encounter.

HiEv: Heck, if it wasn't for my Magic the Gathering collection I might have ended up being homeless.

Think about how much more money you would've had, had you invested that money wisely.

There is nothing wrong with paying for something that entertains you.

When it takes over priority from other parts of your life, yes there is something wrong with it.

If you let something interfere with your life like that, then the problem isn't with that thing, the problem is with YOU.

Partly true, but casinos, breweries and tobacco manufacturers get rich because they get their customers hooked. MTG and Pokemon are no different in that regard.

There is nothing evil about having fun.

Stretching wayyy out...waaaaaayyyyyy out....lady...get real. It amazes me how many people will blame something like Pokemon or Harry Potter. It's not your cruddy parenting skills noooooo. You've found the solution to your problem, congratulations.

Honestly if it were for better parenting, they wouldn't have to worry about any of this crap would they. I kinda got that from the fruit that the tree bears bit.

kthnxbai!

@CrakrJak: You know what? I literally referred to myself as "The Magic Addict" for a while. However, I only spent money I could afford on it, and IT WAS WORTH IT.

There is nothing wrong with paying for something that entertains you. That's exactly what you do every time you pay for a movie ticket, cable bill, or just about anything else that isn't simply covering the necessities.

There is nothing evil about having fun.

Heck, if it wasn't for my Magic the Gathering collection I might have ended up being homeless. I sold my Black Lotus (the most valuable M:tG card) and complete set of dual lands to cover the rent when I was short one month. (And no, M:tG was not the cause of that situation.)

If you let something interfere with your life like that, then the problem isn't with that thing, the problem is with YOU. Don't blame other things for causing the problems made by your own poor decisions.

When American corporations do it, it's called "marketing to kids". When Japanese corporations do it, it's called "demonic mind-control".

The lady admits that seizures can be caused by the flashing lights but that seizures can also be caused by demonic attack.

I'd sure like to see any research that indicated demonic attack as a cause for seizures.

Lol at retarded chrsitians

some of the characters are not good and this opens the door for children to receive evil influences and even demonic invasion. Children can receive demon spirits by opening themselves up to the spirits behind Pokemon

Wow. good to know. To think when i played pokemon i was opening myself up to demonic possession.

This lady is 100% full of shit. What a retarded christian. If you look hard enough and apply logic sparingly, you can as a christian find evil basically everywhere

@CrakrJack
posts here on IAB of kids going apesh|t happy over getting a prized pokemon card and that's just wrong

Yeah, you can find videos of kids freaking out over just about everything. That's not something pokemon created and it's not "wrong" it's just the way some people are.
AS for addiction, people can get addicted to literally ANYthing so coming down on one thing (excluding drugs etc.) is pretty foolish

They said the same thing about D&D, Rock And Roll,Elvis and even Jesus Christ Super Star (and now they often play songs from it in church)Pokemon IS EVIL because it's poorly Drawn, has no story value and is a poor example of Japanese Animation thus giving Other cultures bad examples of the Artforms. If you want good anamie watch Jin Rho, Black Magic M-66 or Appleseed.

aikiman: It's rather plain that these sort of trading card games are addictive to most people that get into it, as can be many things in life, and I don't agree with exposing children to that.

I could care less what is printed on the cards themselves, most kids can handle separating fantasy from reality well enough, but we've even had posts here on IAB of kids going apesh|t happy over getting a prized pokemon card and that's just wrong.

It goes on in the report to state that epilepsy = demonic possession. I think it's safe to say this is bullshiit.

@CrakrJak: 'I specifically said the addiction to it was evil'. So it's the addiction or specifically your addiction that is evil, not the game itself. Otherwise why can one person be addicted and others not if the game itself is intrinsically evil?

Jesus Christ, after ruining pre-marital sex, the church has to go ruin Pokemon; my childhood is being destroyed as we speak!

@Crakr: I'm pretty sure that the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders does not recognize video game addiction as an addiction. I'm not even sure there's a reputable mental health organization that says you can get addicted to video games. Just sayin'.

"evolution is true, creationism is a lie."

You're not entirely correct there, Dave.
Yes, evolution is true, but creationism is not a lie. A lie is a deliberate statement intended to mislead. If you believe something that is incorrect, you are simply "wrong" not a lier.

HiEv: I specifically said the addiction to it was evil, it was also a huge waste of money even though it was fun for awhile.

To be competitive, and I certainly was, you have to spend large sums of money on full boxes of expansion packs, most of which you will never get back if you ever decide to sell them (if you can even find someone to buy them).

That is why I compared it to gambling. Any addiction that worms it's way past other more important priorities, like your family or your job, is evil and you should rid yourself of it before it destroys you.

@CrakrJak: Well, any chance you'll give up your I-Am-Bored addiction then?

Clearly we're evil here.

P.S. I also started playing M:TG in beta. It's a fun game. If something being fun, and wanting to have more fun is "evil", then that's a pretty moronic definition of "evil", since nobody is actually getting hurt.

Jak, I must say that out of the many people here, you are the only one I can honestly say chronically trolls people. I don't have to point out your flawed logic for everyone to see, any intelligent person can pick it out for themselves.

By the way, evolution is true, creationism is a lie.

LuckyDave: I used to play MTG and got addicted to it. Had built up a sizable collection including many full sets starting with BETA. It started out very humbly, just a simple card game to pass the time, but after the 'Dark' set I realized this game was never going to end and I would have to waste more and more money on it just to keep up.

I won several local tournaments, then sold my complete sets and then finally sold all but a few decks that I considered sentimental.

I'm glad to have got out of it and recovered at least some of the money wasted on it. Is it 'evil'? It is, as much as another other addiction, like gambling, is. To expose children to that sort of addiction is also evil.

My mother-in-law is like this lady. She believes all the Harry Potter books came straight from the devil. Silly when you think that the Bible has caused much more damage than Lord Valdemort.

Other than this one instance of bat-poo-craziness, she's a nice lady.

Wizards of the Coast(...)creator owner of a card game called Magic: The Gathering, which is played by an estimated 6 million people. Many of these preteens and teens are learned in the art of casting spells and summoning spirits.

Learned in the art of casting spells? Summoning spirits? Wait, so all along all I had to do was tap a few cards and Cthulhu would show up at my door step? There is this thing though, early game mechanics were based on all types of religion and myth. There is even a card called "Wrath of God", an infamous card in the game that reads very simple text: "Destroy all creatures, they can't be regenerated." In plain English: it kills everything, do not pass GO, do not collect $200. If anything this should mean that God has the ultimate power even in this card game. Dogma should not replace common sense and logic.
