Sunday, January 08, 2012 5:43:53 AM I'm curious as to why the pellet gun didn't have some kind of orange cap or marking indicating that it was a pellet gun and not a firearm. I thought it was required that all toy guns or any sort had that to indicate to law enforcement that it's just a toy. The article didn't say he painted to gun or somehow removed the cap, but I'm under the assumption he did. |

Friday, January 06, 2012 9:30:06 PM I see a lot of people asking why the police don't use non lethal weapons to subdue suspects with guns or knifes. The reason for this is if you get tazed and you are holding a fire arm your fist will automatically clench and will result in the disscharge of the firearm, if the person has a knife he could fall on the blade. Using pepper spray doesn't always work and can infact make the suspect angry and more willing to fire blindly. Any time a person of any age is holding a gun and refuses to put it down and then aims it at police they are required to shoot first and ask questions later, there could be innocent people in the background. |

Friday, January 06, 2012 8:38:52 PM almightybob1-" non-lethal alternative like tazer or something would have been better" Sure, YOU'RE free to bring some pepper-spray to a gun fight. An officer is smart enough to use the most effective method to keep himself and others from getting shot. Corpsecrank-"amazed that a trained officer could not distinguish the difference between a pellet gun and a real weapon." Here's two pistols. One is a BB gun, the other a 9x18 Makarov:
Please, tell us which is which. Take your time (which the cops did not have). Examine them closely (which they could not do). Would you be willing to bet your life, and the lives of others, on your selection? |

Friday, January 06, 2012 6:42:53 AM McGovern: How did Whitman arm himself? By buying rifles and shotguns over the counter. In Denmark you require a gun license before you can buy guns, which requires proof of a legitimate reason for owning the gun, as well as criminal and mental record checks. |

Friday, January 06, 2012 6:31:53 AM Actually, cops don't shoot to kill; they shoot to stop. When you shoot anything, you are shooting to kill. Anyway, a non-lethal alternative like tazer or something would have been better and stopped them having to kill him, but apart from that I can't criticise the police. If you repeatedly ignore the instructions of armed cops, and point a replica gun at people, you are going to get shot, because the police can't afford to assume it's fake in a country with so many real handguns available. |

Friday, January 06, 2012 12:07:46 AM Okay guys, this is how officers are trained. If the gun looks real, he's told MULTIPLE times to put it down and refuses, and then points what LOOKS LIKE a real gun at the officers? You're going to get shot. Real gun or not, doesn't matter how old you are. The officers reacted appropriatly. |

Thursday, January 05, 2012 10:38:20 AM @izaq Charles Whitman killed 16 and wounded 32 with what many considered hunting rifles. What exactly does Denmark consider "ok" and "bad"? A pistol on average is only effective to about 50 yards a rifle is much greater than that and hit harder so in reality those restriction accomplish nothing. |

Thursday, January 05, 2012 8:13:02 AM Actually, cops don't shoot to kill; they shoot to stop. That means shooting the center of mass. Cops will never take a head shot unless that's the only shot they can get. ^This. They're trained for center mass because it's the greatest chance of a hit. Anyone who says they should shoot in the leg needs to use a brain and not just accept whatever they see on fictional shows/movies. |

Thursday, January 05, 2012 6:45:34 AM How the hell would you know that? I assumed as much. If you don't like my definition, I can make it "things are sad when there is a loss of any kind", which this story does meet, just barely. My point is that I don't consider this story "sad", at all. Most people if put in place of the cop would have shot the kid as well. |

Thursday, January 05, 2012 6:06:12 AM @Izaq The homicide rate for Denmark (firearm related) is 1.46 homicides per 100,000 people..which is equal to most of the European countries (even those that allow firearm ownership)...so, apparently not all guns held in Denmark are fake...so, if your cops always believe they are...you have REALLY stupid police. |

Thursday, January 05, 2012 5:37:26 AM Izaq you are stupid. If guns were 100% banned in America, then who would have guns? Nobody? Wrong. The same people that deal with illegal drugs would then have illegal firearms, while our police have tasers and batons to deal with their guns. Also do some research, washington DC has more gun crime than other gun-allowed places. |

Thursday, January 05, 2012 5:36:58 AM @Izaq: And others who don't think lawful citizens should own guns: Read This (I submitted it to IAB alreaady) His 'fake gun' was loud enough to be heard in the classrooms. He fired it inside the Principal's office? That's one loud pellet gun! |

Thursday, January 05, 2012 5:35:16 AM One less dumbass in the world. Maybe the kid shouldnt have brought that to school, maybe he shouldnt have been waving it around like a real weapon, maybe he shouldnt point it at the officers. I say good job lou. Dumbass kid apparently wanted to die. |

Thursday, January 05, 2012 5:01:59 AM I'm really not surprised at the behavior of the TX cops. All I've come in contact with are merciless and have a chip on their shoulder. I don't know what that kid was doing with the fake gun, and I agree that it was stupid, but he's still just a kid. I don't think the police officers reacted well. |

Thursday, January 05, 2012 4:59:20 AM In Denmark no firearms are allowed to anyone except hunting riffles etc. Regulations are very strict. So if a kid holds a gun the police naturally assumes it to be a toy gun, because it always is. Strange concept of "we need guns to protect ourselves"... from what? Gun accidents? Yeah more firearms equals more safety. The logic is amazing! |
