I worked as a waitress in Canada for a while, most people would only tip 5-10%.

Mexico - Cash is accepted. Dollars are prefered.
Says nothing about tips. I love you, Mexico.

Well, where I always lived tips are not customary since being a waitress is a normal paying job.

That being said, it's obvious I rarely tip (tipping never crosses one mind). However, I do round up when given a good service at coffees and I tip a couple of euros when at restaurants and hair dressers where I'm given a good service. Tipping here is an incentive and a show of gratitude for an above average service, not something expected.

@kingpong never heard of a waiter making 30 bucks an hour, I always made closer to 10-15

@kingpong: I'm pretty sure I've never heard of that up here. Kinda defeats the point of a "minimum" wage.

@patchgrabber, since tips are a given, it is assumed that they will make up the difference in their tips and businesses are allowed to pay under minimum wage. It helps keep restaurant costs down significantly and allows for many restaurants to stay in business longer than they would if they had to pay minimum wage and people who are good waiters can make $20-30 an hour. Everybody wins with this system, except pooty waiters but drat those guys.

They make LESS than minimum wage

How does that work? The only people I know of up here that make technically less than minimum wage are grad students.

huh... I've never seen anyone tip in the parts of Australia I've been to. I won't be happy if it comes into practice here. We have good wages for 90% jobs, tips simply aren't necessary.

Food Delivery: Speaking as an ex pizza delivery person, we consider all tips under $3 to be bad. They make LESS than minimum wage people, help em out! ESPECIALLY if they are using their own car. many places do not provide a car, and places such as papa johns is still pretending gas is $1.50 a gallon. We pay for our own gas.

I was usually happy to get a tip when I delivered pizza, especially when gas went above 4 bucks a gallon.. though, it seemed the farther I had to drive, the smaller the tip I got (if any)
I especially liked the guy whose order was 19.99 and gave me a 20 and said keep the change.. *sarcasm*

I work in a pub so don't get tips, but get a hell of a lot of drinks bought for me. My regulars help maintain my alcohol abuse. So sweet <3

Some jobs don't require a tip, but when ur pay is 5.50 and hour, tips come in real nice. :)

That's a symptom of a tipping culture. They could just as easily tack a service charge and pay you a little more, they just don't want to. A service charge would also eliminate cheap people not tipping, but would then also not require servers/dealers/etc. to be extra nice. Also less slutty waitresses.

In England we tip if we want to tip, not because we have to... me personally: I only tip if they've done a better than average job, so like a really really good job :)

I live in Australia and 98% of the time I don't leave a tip. If I do, its because I'm with a large group of people, and counting out change can be a pain

"I never understood tipping. Do your damned job. I don't get tips at work...even if I go above and beyond. The most I get is, "Attaboy!"
So, I should pay someone extra for doing what was expected of them?"

I'm a poker dealer and i make anywhere from $1 to $15 a hand, depending on the game being played, how big of a "george" they are, and how nice i am to them. I do my job, and it's quite expected to get paid for it. Some jobs don't require a tip, but when ur pay is 5.50 and hour, tips come in real nice. :)

It's not really customary to tip in Australia. But it's super awesome when you do!

I only really tip for above and beyond service. If someone only does their job they won't get a tip, if they are awful, I might complain.

However if you go above and beyond, then I will tip and sometimes quite a bit. I had one amazing server recently, smiling, polite professional and did an amazing job, not just for my table but looked like the same treatment for everyone. When it came round to the bill he got a 40% tip (bearing in mind that a 10% is the norm) and when he saw that he was really happy about it and I was glad to help.

A tip to me is gratuity, as in thank you for making my meal great, not something that is given for nothing.

Tipping is so wrong its just not even funny.
I pay for the service as part of the meal.
I expect staff to be paid PROPERLY by their employer or I will boycott their establishment.

service is part of the experience.

I have served tables at my mates small Italian restaurant and I was paid properly.Had a customer offered a tip I would have graciously declined as "not necessary I am just doing what I am paid for"- (and thanked them for the gesture).
In fact I felt it would be impolite to accept extra payment.

I will neither pay nor accept a tip.
