It's called gallows humor. It's a way to deal with Horrific circumstances that often have life and death consequences. The point here should be that they showed up and saved his life. |

there REALLY needs to be a better hiring process for cops AND they need to give them MUCH better training that does not turn them into para-military aholes that feel free to treat people like subhumans. |

This is true, sometimes they do...But more often then not,it's just a way to relieve stress. If you've ever known many officers, you'll find there is a high occurrence of them dating/marrying nurses and teachers... other people that have to regularly deal with high stress. |

Cops are pricks because of their job. If you had to deal with the worst of humanity day in and out, your sense of humor would be skewed and you might say things that are outrageous, it comes with compartmentalizing your emotions. (I work in a involuntary mental hospital, good people make awful jokes trust me) |
