Sorry Angilion but your princess is in another castle. Every word comes from some other word, which came from some other word before it. S h i t e may have meant the same thing as s h i t centuries ago, but today if you were to use it people would be unlikely to associate it with a toilet bowl floater than something 'foolish'.
Language evolves and n i g g a IS NOT n i g g e r. Completely different meanings. Even so, using either word is a matter of courtesy. You wouldn't want to use it in mixed company any more than you'd use s h i t e, but with close friends bad language is a matter of personal boundaries.
I'm a liberal and anti racism, but I think anyone who gets offended over a word, no matter it's history isn't what they feel the word represents them as...they're just idiots...oh sorry ejit's. |

pooe is a variation on poo that means nonsense or foolishness. Do we confuse one for the other? No. We know what they mean by the context and anything else is over sensitivity.
'pooe' is simply an older version of 'poo', closer to the Old English Germanic origin. It is not a different word. It doesn't have a different meaning.
But it's still a bigger difference than your other example, which is simply a difference in spelling with the same pronunciation. At least 'pooe' is pronounced differently to 'poo'. |

Just had a look around...'Egger' is in use in some parts of Germany as a family name and is listed as referring to a place, as many family names do. 'corner' and 'ridge' or 'peak' are both cited (depending on which part of Germany, apparently).
Just found an interesting 3rd possibility - a corruption of 'Edgar' (which used to be a surname). |

Actually Angilion, from what I read the word derives from the Old Germanic "Negger," for 'Tillsman.'
Is that via Arnold Schwarzenegger's surname? I've read several different etymologies for that and the stated possible link to plowing is 'egge', apparently a type of tool related to plowing. Which might make 'egger' for 'plower' or 'tiller'. Which doesn't account for the 'n', which is a pretty big part of the word. In Arnold's name, the 'n' is from the first root word, not the second. So, if that is the right etymology, it's Schwarzen-egger, not Schwarze-negger.
I don't know much about German etymology, only where it intersects with English etymology. But as far as I can tell, there's better evidence for the 'niger' etymology, from Latin via one of the European languages that have their word for 'black' derived from the Latin. |

As a black woman, i completely agree that no one should use any form of the word(I don't use it myself and my mama would beat me if she heard it come out my mouth), but I think the whole "i can talk about my mama, but you can't" ideal is a great summary of how it should be dealt with.
@Tommy your completely wrong. growing up in NC, I heard more than a few old uncle toms use that word against black people. |

@Collegebound: I never said anything about advocating violence. Besides, conservatives have a "thick skin". That wasn't offensive to them. I can even point out obvious sterotypes like this and it won't bother them. They should just "get over it". |

I understand people of certain races may be raw about the social injustices they face and may perceive a word as insulting due to its social context. That being said, I resent being told I cannot say a word as I don't have the right to because my skin is beige. If it truly bothers people, I won't say it, but only because I can respect someone else's feelings, not because I think my skin color dictates (or should dictate) how I communicate or what rights I have.
