Each word has an accent mark that corresponds to a different pronunciation called a tone, making each word different, and different combinations can also affect the meaning. It is not obvious to someone who does not understand Chinese, but not impossible.

What's the point of this? If you don't speak a language obviously you aren't going to understand it. I'm learning Mandarin myself and I'm not the first so I don't understand why the desc says "can't" when we very much have the ability to, it just takes time.
This story would most likely be confusing to even a native speaker if it was read out loud. Usually they add in more words when they speak to clarify in cases where it's not clear which word they're saying. That's not necessary in writing because as you can see, the characters are different even if they are pronounced similarly. |
