a nativity scene is offensive because it is on government land. That means the government supports Christianity which is against the constitution. When he said it was offensive he means that the government was forcing the idea upon people that if you don't believe in someone, you deserve to be tortured forever. That is the sickest and most offensive thing in the world. That people deserve to be tortured because they don't agree with you.

How is a nativity scene "offensive"? I don't mind atheists, but the ones who go around complaining about this poo just piss me off. Get a damn life and be offended by something that is ACTUALLY OFFENSIVE.

This is small town TX, it's the culture, get over it.

I don't understand why this segment was on a show called "Follow the Money". Anybody? I don't watch Fux News.

In any case, the atheist wasn't denigrating Christ, in my opinion, but he was complaining about one interpretation of original sin which isn't shared by all Christians. I don't really see how that ties to the nativity scene or how that insults anyone, even if it doesn't belong on public property.

That aithiest from Wisconsin has no idea what he is talking about. He brought no meat to the table in that debate, only opinion. Win for Christians!!!!

And you're wrong too.

I don't think I'm wrong, exactly, just generalizing. I know that gnosticism is knowledge of God's existence or not and is not theistic, I'm merely using the vernacular of "agnostic" to show that in today's world, someone who would classify themselves as an agnostic theist, would be very unlikely to call themselves agnostic. Most who would classify themselves as agnostic, when asked if they believe in God, would likely say "no" or " I don't know".

@ccalhoun

Don't quite see how it was a waste. I'll believe in a magic teapot and encourage others to believe it if it changes their personality for the better. Fairy tales > pretension

I'm an Athiest, and I have to say, this is the dumbest thing ever. So a few Christians put up a symbol of their religion? It isn't 'insulting'. This is America, and in history, this happened, and showing the birth of a child, the son of God or not, isn't insulting to me in any way.

I assure you, 80% of the population is definitely not Christian. And if you and an athiest died tomorrow, and the athiest was right, you wasted your life believing in and, most likely completely failing to live by a set of morals and standards taught by a collection of fairy tales and trying to force others to believe them, too.

80% of the US population claim to be christian. 80% of our population is wrong? I'll tell you what. If an atheist is right and I am wrong, and we both die tomorrow then what? Nothing happens we are just bones. On the other hand, if I (and the rest of the 80%) am right, and the atheist is wrong and we both die tomorrow then what? I go to a wonderful place called heaven, and the atheist goes to a fiery hell. Believe what you want, as for me and my house, we will serve the lord.

"Agnostic atheism?" "Agnostic theism?" Aren't those both contradictions in terms?

No. I explained in some detail what each word means - can you tell me which parts didn't you understand, so I can come up with another way to explain them?

So, for example, I am an agnostic atheist. I don't have compelling objective evidence, let alone know for certain, about the existence or lack thereof of any kind of god or gods and I don't believe in them.

You can have agnostic theists (pure faith - they acknowledge they don't have objective evidence, but they believe anyway)

You can have gnostic atheists (they claim to know, objectively, that there aren't any gods and they don't believe in any gods).

You can have gnostic theists (they claim to know, objectively, that there are god(s) and they believe in them). Although it could be argued that gnostic theism is technically impossible because if you have objective proof then belief is an irrelevant concept.

ben franklin never said that.

who is the red head? looks like my little mermaid.

i'm an atheist, and i don't like what that group is doing. it's none of their business, and it makes all of us look bad. let them have their little scene, it's not like he had a better idea for it (though i vote for burning it due to how ugly they look). like it was sponsored by burgerking.

i don't like how he said it was a symbol of hate, when it's not. it's a birth scene, nothing more. the whole principal of jesus is messed up though.

i also wish people would get rid of the notion that the stupid spaghetti monster is our god. it's idiotic, but would make a cool decoration. we could hang meatballs from the trees.

"Agnostics are atheists." wait what? That is the stupidest thing I heard. Agnostic believes that there is a higher power, they just don't know what it is. Atheists don't believe in a higher power. There is a difference.

You are wrong about what "agnostic" means, so your conclusion is wrong and you are making yourself look foolish for calling someone stupid because they know what a word means and you don't.

Agnostics are atheists.

And you're wrong too.

Agnosticism is the general idea, applying to all things and not just religion, that a person should not claim something to be definitely true unless they can objectively prove it or, in more casual usage, give compelling objective evidence for it. It's a seperate thing from religious belief or lack thereof.

Gnosis - knowledge.
Theos - gods.

Different things.

The original holiday was a pagan holiday called Yule.

No, that was usurped by Christianity a bit later, when it conquered northern Europe. The original was Saturnalia/Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, which Christianity usurped when it was conquering Rome.

Well, the fact of the matter is, Christmas is a distinctly religious holiday, specifically Christian. Sure, there are other celebrations going on at the same time (Hanukkah, Ramadan), but America by and large celebrates CHRISTMAS. I don't understand why people have no problem celebrating Christmas but then turn and get offended when the root of the holiday is mentioned.

The root of the holiday has absolutely nothing to do with Christianity. It's a combination of the traditonal ancient Roman religious celebration of the winter equinox (Saturnalia) and Mithraism (specifically, Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, the celebration of the birth of the sun god on the 25th of December).

So you're completely wrong. Even your own bible (the only mention of Jesus' birth) clearly puts Jesus' birthday outside of winter and certainly not in the middle of it.
