Tuesday, December 13, 2011 11:22:03 PM Sarah, 60 is considered to be a nice number to work with because it's evenly divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 30, while 100 is divisible by fewer numbers: 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 25, and 50. It's the same reason a circle is divided into 360 deg -- it's divisible by lots of whole-number factors. The only reason we use base 10 numbers is because we have 10 fingers. We might not have been as dexterous with only 8, but our numbering system would have been simpler. If we had 12 fingers, though, a base 12 system would be pretty nice if you like to divide by 3 which is a pain in the @$$ in base 8 or 10. |

Tuesday, December 13, 2011 8:20:23 PM @xelous "Oh snap!" Your sarcasm filter is not working properly. It's either a loose connection or a defective unit. Smack your head on the desk and if that doesn't fix it, send it in for inspection. |

Tuesday, December 13, 2011 5:11:03 PM Besides that.. I never mentioned anything about why we have as many days that we have in a year.. Or revolutions around the sun.. |

Tuesday, December 13, 2011 5:05:54 PM @insanmonster I'm not talking about the theory of relativity or anything man.. Sheesh.. I'm just saying that time, as we calculate it on earth, is based on revolutions of the earth. Meaning that we started of in Egypt (spread to Greeks after) with sundials and split the day and night equally with 12 hours given to each one. |

Tuesday, December 13, 2011 4:51:46 PM @HI-haola Time has nothing to do with the rotation of the earth. It has to do with quantum vibrations in atoms. It has been a while since I have studied any quantum and I am no expert but the earth rotates around the sun around every 365.25 days (which is why we have a leap year). The way we measure time is completely independent of the number of days in a year.

Tuesday, December 13, 2011 4:12:44 PM @SarahofBorg "I don't understand this whole 60 seconds = 1 minute crap. While can't we have centi-seconds? Why 60? Why not 100 like rational people? Same with 60 minutes = an hour. It's so damn confusing." It's based on the revolution of the Earth... I'm not gonna make a mean reply to your comment.. Just that how can you call yourself Borg and not be logical?... |

Tuesday, December 13, 2011 3:25:50 PM 60 seconds = 1 minute. 2 minutes = 120 seconds. 1.00 = 1 HOUR and no seconds. Thats 60 minutes. Add 1.00 and 1.00 thats 2 HOURS and no seconds. Or 120 minutes. You're reading it wrong. Getting hours and seconds confused. Americans! Hey. You want to be a colony again? You'll get a better education. |

Same with 60 minutes = an hour. It's so damn confusing." Its because of the human fixation on the number 12. 12 months, 12 hours, 5 minute increments of 12 equaling 60 in an hour. Think of the 0:00 as not a timer, but as a place holder for numbers. Before the colon, you put in minutes, after the colon you put in seconds, done and done. Funny how so many of you try long winded explanations to a timing shortcut. |
