Cheated on his wife while he was impeaching Clinton for cheating on HIS wife. Serves his cancer-stricken wife the divorce papers while she's in the hospital. WHY do Republicans even let this creep speak for them, let alone run for president?

Ooo! @Gerry1's got his knickers in a knot over this issue! I thought he was "unflappable"!

...there aren't enough jobs for adults

How about clearing out the 10 MILLION + illegals and thus allowing the market forces to improve wages for currently low-paying jobs? No gov't interference needed, free markets have worked pretty well since 1776 eh?

@ CaptKangaroo - Nope. It's only for the poor kids.

"Class, it's study period. I want you all to read chapter 5. Everyone except [Poor Kids Name] ... you go mop the floor and clean the toilets."

CJ - Don't be naive, I think Newt is after exactly that. He uses the 'poor student work program' to pitch the idea and by the time you realise your grand child is working in a factory it's too late.

Even if St. Newt is only doing good as you suggest, others less scrupulous will take advantage of lax child labor laws and eliminating the minimum wage.

Maybe this is how Newt will solve the economic problems...cheep child labor.

@CrakrJak- I'm fine with that as long as it's done in the middle class and the upper class as well; Those are the kids that most need to learn about honest labor- and perhaps fat old Newt should get off his flabby butt and work as well.

Gerry: Liberals are perfectly fine with teaching elementary school students about sex, gays, condoms, etc... But they get their panties in a bunch over teaching kids to work ?

Newt is not advocating work houses for children, like in some Dickens novel, He's talking about teaching kids the value of working for a living.

How about this...there aren't enough jobs for adults. Why put more workers out there competing for the jobs?

Im not saying make sweatshops in america legal. I dont think anyone would suggest that.

I see nothing wrong with letting 12 year olds come in and stock the shelves at a gas station, scrub some cars at a carwash, mop the gymnasium floors or trim some hedges.

I used to mow lawns when i was 12.. Had no safety equipment, often the lawns i was mowing nobody would be home at the time. It was pretty dangerous as far as working conditions go come to think of it.

I crossed the street to help the little market stock their coolers when i was pretty young too. They paid me in soda and candy. Sure was some cheap labor for them. Kinda too bad i couldn't get minimum wage.

Beacuse this thread needs some racism too.

Clearly, this shows the true nature of the Newt (In Republicanland).

@ Taco ... the differance is the teachers and 'liberals' don't have to repeal child labor laws to teach the lessons of work and working-together.

There's no valid reason to repeal the protective laws to do what Gringrich proposes. He's just using the poor school kid as a poster child to open the door for child labor.

When i was a child the liberals made me (and my entire school) go down to the beach and pickup trash for free.

My elementary school teachers made us do the same in our local park, they disguised it as a treasure hunt, on 'Earth Day.

Am I supposed to be outraged by this? I worked in the front office of my school and in the library, and these kids would paid? We had extra curriculars that cleaned the school. I don't see the difference between what hes saying and what already goes on.

Epic @ Tacos. I remember when I was in middle school, I was made to mop the lunchroom at my school by a liberal racist black principal.

I was being taught a lesson I suppose. The lesson was, WORK IS GOOD FOR YOU!

My child's preschool teacher makes the kids clean the classroom. She even lets them vacuum and use glass cleaner.

Teachers do it: Dawww, thats so cute getting the kids to help!
Liberals do it: Its for the earth!
Republican says it: Read comments below

And so the leftists & MSM attacks begin! Who'd have guessed?

Of course they attacked Obama just as much, eh?

Again? Saying that the left doesn't criticize Obama is pointless, because the right never criticizes their golden-boys either, yet time and again you bring this up. We get it, you've cracked the Da Vinci code and the left won't criticize their own.

Yawn.

How is working at a local business different than working at a school? They are going to empty trash at both, they are going to mop floor at both, they will be a child working at both. You make no ground on your argument

Except for the fact that no one lost their job at these local businesses so that the kids could work. You need to calm down and think before you write. I agree with Gerry, nothing is wrong with high school kids working, I just doubt that they would be willing to for the most part, and I also don't agree with firing janitors, secretaries, etc. just so students can work, especially when it's not necessary.

You sound like the type of person that is blind to reality.

And you sound like the type of person who misinterprets someone else's meaning and throws a fit about it.

Focus on the things he can actually achieve. He can't get the wage dropped. He can't get rid of SSI and Medicare. Instead, look at things like, lowering the legal working age from 14 to 12. That's doable, and fair, and would help families.

Also, It isn't one of the things that's doable in our society, but I don't think I'd have a problem with the thing you said about taking welfare babies away from parents who are just using those kids to get a paycheck and putting them into good homes. The problem with it, is you would have to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the parent was using the child for welfare.
