Im a teacher, and I have to say if this guy gets fired over something silly like that that's ridiculous. If saying that is enough to get you fired I should have been fired five times over by now. That's just dumb. |

Depends on the context. If the student was making an excuse about not doing it and the teacher goes "What, did you eat it or something?" making a joke off a well known phrase then I think it's ok. But if he was all "Hey fatty, did you eat your homework you fat fatass?" then I think it's a problem. |

So, apparently it's okay that colleges have to offer remedial reading and math courses because incoming freshmen are functionally illiterate, but THIS is intolerable. |

So apparently the students have the right to free speech, but teachers don't.
There's quite a large difference between being allowed to express an opinion amongst peers, and an authority figure verbally abusing someone in their care. Keep in mind, if the student had retaliated with a similar insult, it's likely he'd have been suspended.
That said, if this is a first offense, I think firing may be a bit much. However, we don't know if it's a first offense, or if the teacher has a prior history of abusive treatment. Some type of disciplinary action is called for, however. |
