Thursday, November 24, 2011 12:02:38 AM Ah- No- I don't think they were patronising or anything, just that loud, simple way you speak to kids -or the elderly- you can see affection running both ways... |

Wednesday, November 23, 2011 1:58:15 PM I wouldn't consider it talking down to her, the woman in the background is obviously a mother so I'm pretty sure she talks to everyone like that (Raise your hand if you want a hamburger!) The guy filming the video was just very sweet with her. I know I'm like that with my grandmother, not because I don't think she can keep up with me. That women will take a strip of flesh off you if you step out of line but she's a little hard of hearing. So, when I'm with her I just speak a little slower and sweeter, not louder...because it helps her, and she's my memaw and I love her and she never yells at me because I'm awesome :D Besides, look how happy she is. Clearly she's got a loving family- There's a lot of people who come shopping with seniors through my work that I wish would speak a little sweeter to their parents. =( |

Wednesday, November 23, 2011 1:12:12 PM @LillianDulci - I don't think they were talking down to her. The guy taping clearly cared about his grandma - he refers to her affectionately as "grams" and asks multiple times if she's enjoying the Pop Rocks. Perhaps what you see as talking to the elderly like children is that that people often speak slowly and use shorter sentences when speaking to elders (because of the hearing and mental unsharpening that happens when we get old)?

Wednesday, November 23, 2011 1:00:10 PM "I love the fact that while they speak to her as if she was a child-" I don't really wanna side track this too much but I'm curious. One of my grandpas died before I was born, the other died when I was young. My grandma from my dad's side was a really overbearing person, she died in her early 90s a few years ago. My grandma from my mom's side was very active and healthy until she got cancer and died within a year, in her mid 70s. I never once talked to my grandparents like they were kids, and my parents didn't talk to their parents like they were kids. Why do people do this? Is it really as common as it seems? Because in almost all videos with grandparents, it seems like the grandkids always talk down to them as if they're unable to comprehend anything. I never felt that way about my grandmas when they were alive. Even when I saw my great grandpa who died at 99 years old, I didn't talk down to him. |

Wednesday, November 23, 2011 12:46:49 PM How sweet, I love the fact that while they speak to her as if she was a child- at the end if you look at her face she is being nice to him as HE is the child... |
