Saturday, November 19, 2011 4:45:20 PM So does your proposed name. It only accounts for raising, not lowering. I suggest "Automated Rising and Setting Equipment". So people can talk about riding arses all night.

Friday, November 18, 2011 4:21:51 PM "Lift" has multiple common meanings, "elevator" has only one, so that could be it. I don't really see why it's an issue that they decided to use elevator instead of lift. You understand what both words mean, correct? In the UK, the word 'lift' when used as a noun has only one meaning. I haven't seen 'elevator' used at all here except in the name of a foreign company that makes lifts. It's possible, but I think it's more likely that the sign is faked for a laugh but someone who isn't British. |

Friday, November 18, 2011 3:07:56 PM @LillianDulci - ok - apart from being the American word for lift, elevator can also mean someone or something that elevates anything, like one of the controls surfaces on an aeroplane, or a mechanical device for shifting material upwards. But the real issue is - this is meant to be a British University - where scholars are normally pretty hot about precise use of English. Of course universities have gone to the dogs since my day so maybe using this bastardised americanism is acceptable now. |

Friday, November 18, 2011 2:58:16 PM Part of a rich history of student japery (the fake notice I mean). Brits would surely use the word lift, and in this case should probably have gone with contraceptive rather than condom (especially after showboating with the intense magnitude cr*p). Missed opportunity to state that the footage was intensely scrutinised between 16/10 03:15 and 16/10 03:18. "Also please masturbate in your own rooms" Student 1 - Clean this up! Student 2 - No - Its your room! Student 1 - Its your spunk! |

Friday, November 18, 2011 12:53:03 PM What bit of the word lift would they have trouble with. stuck on the lift and all? If you have a lot of international students who have trouble with english surely all signs would be multi -lingual? |

Friday, November 18, 2011 12:37:58 PM Well it is probably because we have a lot of international students in Nottingham so they would understand elevator better. |
