No-one risked killing anyone (except the people who started the protests, who are responsible for entirely predictable violence that could escalate to murder). It is idiotic to suggest that someone under threat should exit the car that gave them the only protection available.

The violent protesters who, many years ago, surrounding my parents car with three young children in it were wearing symbols like that you use. They banged on the car and rocked it. There was no way were were going to leave the car.

Having been in a car surrounded by violent left-wing protesters ("peace campaigners" ironically) I'm with the driver on this.

Guy starts moving not fast pedestrians should move out the way protest/riot or no protest/riot the road hasn't been cut off for your private use in this one. drive slowly forward all the time in central london only way to get pedestrians to stop moving into the road during your green light.

The car moves up and stops the guy gets annoyed, car moves a bit more then he goes off on one hitting it. Surrounded by people he guns it to get out of the situation his perceived and many others it seems justifiable response.

You may say it was an over reaction but pedestrian is wrong, you want to be a hero(standing up for right to walk across road against a jackass in a merc) or jackarse (attacking a car) you have to accept you don't know the person. I have a complete maniac friend I've seen get out of a car and punch the driver in front at the next turning for giving him the finger earlier. You provoke a reaction be expected to meet a over the top response from a nutter.

there shouldn't be any debate, the castle law extends to your car, if you feel your life is threatened, you have the right to defend yourself.

its the same idea as some guy breaks into your house and threatens you with a knife, you shoot him with a gun; in this case the knife = fist, the gun = car

Someone threatened a person who was doing nothing wrong and tried to prevent that person escaping while a large group of people approached.

That person escaped as best they could, doing as little harm as possible, even to the person threatening them.

Very reasonable force by a person with rational reason to believe their life was under threat. It's the protestor who should be arrested, not the driver.

For those unaware, Oakland has an extremely high violent crime rate. I may not support the driver, but if I was there, I can honestly say that someone pounding on my car yelling at me in the middle of an angry mob would scare the poo out of me.

If you plan on slamming your hands on a man's several tens of thousands of dollars worth of car....you better hope you have "I'm an idiot" insurance...

I'm not sure, but I vaguely remember being taught not to walk into the path of a moving vehicle. Just because you're accompanied by a swarm of fellow morons, it doesn't make you bullet proof. Behold, a future Darwin Award recipient!

also, in Texas pedestrians do not always have the right of way, and i am pretty sure that on no freeway in the world does a pedestrian have the right of way...even in California, but I don't really know. Would a pedestrian have the right of way when crossing 280? IF not the statement pedestrians always have the right of way is invalid, just sayin...

Notice how the op didn't describe the protesters as innocent.

I read in an article that the protesters were threatening the driver even before that guy started beating on the car. The driver panicked because he feared for his safety.

HalfPintRoo-"Mowing down pedestrians because they were beating on the hood of your car = wrong"

Why is it everyone rooting for the idiot blames it on 'damaging the hood of a car'. Why not point out what it really is, violent and belligerent threatening behavior.

LillianDulci-"same police that accused protesters of doing things they didn't do"

Cite, please.

LillianDulci-"same police that severely injured a US vet"

Who was in the middle of a mob that was violent and throwing things at the police (also, caught on video).

Being bunched up with a mob of people throwing things at officers is as smart as standing in front of a car while you threaten the driver. (the fact that he is a vet is irrelevant. I don't think the cops have 'Vet-seeking rubber bullets')

LillianDulci-"Those police are against the protesters"

Correction: Those police are enforcing the law agains law breaking

"The logic is 'you're threatening me and my passangers and I am going to remove myself from the situation. Too bad you are between me and my escape route.'. "

That was briliant. Thank you !

"It is telling the the police talked to the driver, and let him GO ON HIS WAY. "
Those police are the same police that accused protesters of doing things they didn't do or made it seem worse than it really was. Those police are the same police that severely injured a US vet and then lied about the ways they were attacking the protesters when it's clear what they were doing in videos. Those police are against the protesters, and those police were WRONG in letting the guy go.

No no, I didn't say I'd do that, I'm just saying there are other ways besides possibly killing people to vent. I would have supported seeing him get out and punch the guy in the face, but I can't support him running them down.

Though the thought of being on IAB for getting trampled by a mob sounds fun :)

chimmeychang - I copy and pasted the title of the article I submitted to IAB. IAB posted the video with the link to the article at the bottom. Trust me, I wouldn't have worded it that way, but I figured I'd be consistent with the article I was liking to.

@halfpintroo - you'd really get out of your car and attack a mob? You're going to be the next story that's on this site. "Girl get stomped to death by Oakland mob"

That dude stopped deliberately in front of a car he saw coming at him. The driver did not rush up on him. I think the driver overreacted. He could have used a little less throttle but fight or flight is a funny thing.

He's a little hint if you don't want to be run over by a car. Don't get involved in riots and cross streets against the light stopping in front of cars and then pounding on them. Those few simple steps will go a long way to keeping you healthy and your bones intact.

Yes it was a riot. I didn't see any major ports being closed due to Tea Party business. I can't seem to recall a single arrest at a Tea Party event. Not even one single rape even!
