Most of my family members has only had two kids. So with the deaths that happen randomly, were not even replacing ourselfs. It is the cultures that pop out 10 kids that will dominate the earth in short time, since they have plenty of spares.

Interesting fact, while the worlds population grows.. In my country, New Zealand, where we have a population of around 4.6 million.. Our population is actually slowly declining because we don't have enough young people to replace the older generation thats dying off.

I decided when I was 15 that I wouldn't have my own kids. I will adopt. Mostly for this reason, but for others as well.

When their resources grow scarce, their population growth slows, or reverses. When resources are plentiful, they increase at a faster rate.

Will this happen to us, or will our intelligence stop that from happening?

It's happening every day.

Or we could kill the rich, and share their wealth.

Eh, we'll just kill poor people as soon as we start running out of stuff.

Aaarghhh! Get this terrible science nonsense away from my eyes. God created me in one day. Population stops growing when God says it should. Remember, this "population growth" is just a theory!

Like all growth economists your reasoning relies on an unclosed system that can always be topped up from outside. boom and bust is the reality of this thinking. you dont even have to run out of resources, if your population rate exceeds your resource take up.

Yes i believe the environment has intrinsic value

What aboug personal space? And dont give me the huge expanse of land per person crap. The future holds increasing migration to bigger cities, plus increased inequality with good chance of social unrest.

So you planning on bringing progeny into this brave new world or you intending to grab what you can and let the future take care of itself?

We could all be housed in a first world fashion with a garden in an area the size of texas, we're only using 65% of the arable land (and last yr we grew enough to feed 11 billion), we have as much water as we could ever ened (with a little desalination). I don't see any reason for people to think we're going to over populate any time soon.

I wonder if we'll level out like wild populations of animals do. When their resources grow scarce, their population growth slows, or reverses. When resources are plentiful, they increase at a faster rate.

Will this happen to us, or will our intelligence stop that from happening?

@MattPrince: And yet--China is only getting more prosperous and more capitalistic. How did that happen?

You seem to have the train of thought that the environment's value exists independent of any context i.e. you think the environment should be preserved for the sake of preserved. I think that the environment's value is judged based on its value to humans i.e. I don't think the preservation of the environment should come second to humans.

About your metaphor: I would think that each car has its own lane all heading to a solid brick wall (bankruptcy); the faster you go, the quicker you hit the post. However, each car is independent of each other, and not one affects the other--since wealth is created and not a static quantity.

And I'm interested in why you think a big population would end in tears--you didn't really explain yourself.

@auburnjunky: Misleading statistic is misleading. You make it sound like the earth is potentially 100% habitable everywhere.
