I'm sure you are aware that there are criminal cultures in some parts of the USA in which it would be OK to attack a random stranger in the street, beat them up and steal their possessions. By their cultural standards, it is OK. Do you think that nobody should be allowed to express disapproval? |

yeah, her hair moved but not her head. from that angle it doesn't look like he slapped her at all, and if he did, it wasn't hard enough for me to think he was trying to hurt her. I do not condone nor try to justify non consensual violence against women(some women do enjoy controlled violence), but this doesn't seem to apply. |

I think people read too much into a thing like this, it's a little slap that's all. Not what I would do in this kind of situation but there we go. Physical violence is an ingrained part of who we are as a species. |

Gerry: No matter what culture, it is NOT accebtable to hit ANYONE! That is basic human rights. If you're religion says it is ok, we will say that is it not! Morality knows no boundaries, it doesn't care what culture, what religion. People have twisted the texts to suit their own desires..
There simply is no justification to this heinous act. And that's too bad, i really respected Mr Sharif. Now i pity him, he is justtoo old. But old or not, this is not the way to go. Shame on him. I think i'll write him a letter. |

Theory of Relativity.
'Morality' is relative from one culture to the next.
In the US or Europe this is wrong.
In Egypt where Omar Sharrif lives it's totally acceptable and it's really not our place to question how a man treats his wife.
Before anyone jumps down my throat, no I'm not saying it would be okay to kill her just because his culture says he can. Don't take it to an extreme. He smacked her. She didn't seem too bothered by it. We're done. |

Having said that, why does her sex matter? There's this radical idea called "sexual equality". Some people think it's a good idea. Those people, obviously, wouldn't make a distinction between him slapping a woman and him slapping a man. |

In his defense, if he was brought up in a culture that has this type of behavior as something acceptable, then we cannot really judge him on it.
Bollocks.
There are cultures in most countries in which it is acceptable to attack strangers in order to steal whatever they happen to have on them or just for the sake of attacking them, or to steal cars to go joyriding, or to rob houses for stuff to fence for drug money. I bet you judge people who do those things. I know I do. If you don't, will you put your money where your mouth is and say that they shouldn't be subject to the laws of your country? That you're OK if they beat you for laughs or to steal your wallet/phone/etc? |

How tolerant should we as a species be of other culture's customs/norms, especially when they appear to violate people's basic human rights?

Omar didn't violate anybodies rights. This chick was annoying the crap outta him and he put her in her place. He told her he was going to get to her but that wasn't good enough. She continued pestering him for a picture. If it were a guy he may have balled that hand into a fist and it would have been justified. |
