And while we're on the subject, can you defend your assertion that "Capitalism doesn't work" chrn368?

jravity1 - here's some food for thought. There's no better example of "making your money go to there hands" than the 30% or so of your income that you are robbed of, which goes directly into various government coffers. We are literally indentured servants to the debt that our 'democratic' government has accumulated 'for' us, and the irony is that 99% of these 99%'ers want to see MORE of this outright plunder going toward the same purpose. Do you think that because top-earner income was on the decline between the 1940's and 1970's that EVERYONE ELSE was necessarily getting richer? If you refer to more thorough statistics on the issue, I'm sure you'd see that the opposite (i.e., that standard of living has increased in measurable proportion to this 'boon' of corporate greed that was inaugurated by circa-80's deregulation) was true. This is not a kleptocracy - nor is it a democracy.

You can't take a system of government that was designed to be a 'republic' and convert it into simple majority rule without encountering some, if not all of the problems that these misguided protesters are rallying against in the first place!

Nothing will change until people realize that Wall Street and K street own our politicians.

That's the point Ruffiana, this wasn't about demanding anything it was about creating awareness. Secondly notice a correlation? Workers aren't being paid because CEO's are giving themselves pay raises at rediculous levels, money that should be going to the company and wages. This results in less money flowing, which results in profit loss. Also, when the top 1% make 20 percent it was a major contrubiting factor to the great depression. We deregulated, and they began almost making the same over a period of time, now we are on the verge of a depression again. This is why bussiness regulation is necessary. Captialism doesn't work, but neither does communism or socialism (and yes there is a difference), what does work is a blending of the two to create a balance, if you lose the balance, things go to hell. FDR exemplified this.

I'm not sure why anyone would expect a group of people, claiming to represent 99% of Americans, to have a shared vision for what the country needs.

What most people do have is a underlying sense that things are not right and quickly getting worse. Ideas about exactly what that is, and more importantly, how to fix the problem are going to be wildly different.

I do think most people would like our elected officials to recognize there are larger issues here that demand broader solutions than simply A) Raise taxes on the wealthy and corporations or B) Cut taxes on the wealthy and corportations and hope that everything fixes itself.

Gerry- No, you don't have to have a solution to express your discontent. I am a libertarian, and believe in freedom of speech to an absolute. But it would certainly help to have a plan.

I am not sure who you are referring to as the people earning the big bucks that need to "fix it". If you are referring to the federal government, good luck with that.

"Just another guy telling us what everyone knows while not offering one concrete, or even general, "solution" to the "problem"."

We don't have to have a solution. It's completely acceptable to say to the "experts" & politicians that what they are doing Is Not Working! and they need to fix it.

They're paid the big bucks to make it work, not trash the country. They're supposed to be learned in the ways of economics beyond the average joe. Time to earn their pay and FIX IT before it turns violent.

There is a myth about people who stopped looking for work. No one stops looking. You may run out of unemployment insurance checks and are no longer counted. They don't stop looking and the fact they have ZERO income makes them look harder and settle for lower pay, even cash-under-the-table less-than-minimum-wage temp jobs.

They just don't count as 'unemployed' anymore as far as the government is concerned.

There is a solution to the problem, but until america admits it has a problem there nothing else worth talking about.

You know I'm all for the protesters of the Occupy _____ blank movement and most of the complaints are valid.... but some of them are asking ridiculous things. For example some are asking for the government to get rid of all their student debts. I know people who worked 2 or 3 jobs to pay off their own debt because they were responsible enough to realize what they got themselves into. Some people just don't want to be responsible for their own actions. I didn't come from a rich family nor am I in one now. My mother had to raise 3 kids on her own and still went to college. She worked 3 jobs and never, never asked for food stamps or wic. She would always tell me that it was her fault for not waiting to have kids and now she has to pay for her actions. She took any job she could. Yeah some rich people don't deserve as much money as they are getting (paris hilton) but some worked their asses off to get there ( Oprah Winfrey). The government should not be the one responsible for our actions.

@artillery: Nice spin. I don't think anyone is saying they don't know why they are there- I'm pretty sure what people are questioning is whether they have any clue as to how to change things other than just taking more money from rich people.

Everyone knows you can't count people who stopped looking for work as unemployed because they're no longer part of the workforce.

It's like being a child or retired, if you're not looking for work you have no right to be considered unemployed.

I think we should ban corporate greed.

And ban nasty people, traffic jams, and rain on Saturday while we're at it.

If you still believe that the protesters don't know what they are protesting about, you should probably stop watching Fox news, because it's clear that they know exactly why they are out there.

The fact is that incomes in all socio-economic classes are rising and have been rising. We as young college grads are richer than our parents were. Don't let your envy of people that have more guide your decisions.

Another thing regarding the unemployment. You're telling me people "stop looking." If you don't have a job, why the HELL would you not continue to look for one. You ain't got $H!T to do anyways!

Also, you can always make your own job.
