Thursday, November 03, 2011 8:00:31 PM Yup, christianity is stupid. Their only cop-out to their whimsical, fantastic fables is that they have the omnipotence of god to explain them, which begs the question of why didn't he do it in a simpler way, like creating eve out of dust too, instead of having to genetically engineer a rib. Or make every wicked person die on the spot, instead of flooding the world, killing all life in the process but a small ark, and then keeping the predators from eating their prey for enough generations to achieve stable population levels, without them starving, etc. |

Friday, October 28, 2011 11:31:21 AM I would like to assume, if i was christian, that god, who created all there is, would be a little mora advanced than us in genetic engineering, proving the little brat comment invalid |

Thursday, October 27, 2011 5:37:44 PM People spend too much time picking apart the literal details of religious stories and ignore the actual important moral lessons. That goes just as much for atheists thinking it's all about an invisible man in the sky as it does for ignorant Christians saying "science contradicts God" or whatever. I'm a Lutheran in a Comparative Religion class, and I don't even bother arguing with people on the Internet about this stuff anymore. |

Thursday, October 27, 2011 5:11:33 PM "Yeah but then the gullib..erm...believers just say 'well God can change dna cause he's god'. They always have that trump card of God can do whatever he wants against all proof and logic." And we always have that trump card of 'prove it. I count a bajillion places within YOUR bible that basically say your religion is stupid and wrong. So you prove me wrong.' But seriously i've stopped arguing with the ignoramuses. Let them be stupid, just as long as they don't try to make my future kids stupid with them. |

Thursday, October 27, 2011 5:09:25 PM I have heard before that adam and lilith were actually the first two beings, eve was lilith and adams daughter and 'rib' actually refers to adams penis. Just read that not too long ago. Not saying it's true or anything, but I am saying that it makes as much sense as everything else in that god forsaken book. |

Thursday, October 27, 2011 3:20:53 PM evanbartlett, the thing about that is that Christians are really dumb, so we're playing the "what-if" game. Assuming Adam and Eve DID exist, they must have been related, and we're all products of incest. We're using their own fairytale against them. |

Thursday, October 27, 2011 3:15:25 PM Apparently some people don't realize that The Holy Bible is largely metaphorical in its allegories. Pssst. The Earth wasn't really created in 144 hours. |

Thursday, October 27, 2011 3:11:40 PM I think it's awesome that people are debating the finer points of genetic theory when talking about the creation of Eve from Adam. It's like debating how Kirk and Spock transport using the latest theories of subatomic physics. |

Thursday, October 27, 2011 1:39:59 PM @lillian the intention of saying that adam was made from dust was intended to 1. to give a reason for man to show humility, 2. display gods mastery of creation by making somethign awesome out of somethign that isnt, 3. set the stage for some heavy metaphors that come up later in the bible. |

Thursday, October 27, 2011 12:24:24 PM @LillianDulci We're just trying to hypothesise scenarios from a genetic viewpoint. If you're using the dust argument, my view on that would be that 'dust' is merely a way of explaining in simple terms to the masses. It is a lot more believable in my eyes to gather 'dust' as a metaphor for atoms etc to create an organism than it is to believe a simple *POOF! - here be man!* The real kicker to that argument is that he got 'dust' ... This is GOD! Dust: Fine, dry powder consisting of tiny particles of earth or waste matter lying on the ground or on surfaces or carried in the air. He has just created the Earth... why is there waste matter or accumulated debris (usually arising from days/ weeks etc of degradation) on his fresh new planet? ... I mean seriously, you've just made something... if it ain't looking pristine then, it never will! |

Thursday, October 27, 2011 12:17:40 PM @patchgrabber pt.2 :) Mosaicism are two genotypically different populations of cells within one organism, usually where one accounts for some phenotypic variation. In Eve's case you could argue mosaicism but in my opinion it would be better described as sibling organ (bone marrow) transplantation. If her 'physiology' was built AROUND (go with this word for now) this rib and her cells are XX while this transplanted rib was XY, they would be genotypically different, ruling out mosaicism. Scenario B is that as I suggested before, there was a sex chromosome duplication (XXY) - which may result in Klinefelter's syndrome. PERHAPS there was a Y-silencing event, (go God! - woo!) leading to a healthy female (subsequently lost in future generations). Scenario C is that Adam's X chromosomes were just duplicated and used as the template for Eve. Two IDENTICAL (Adam-derived) X chromosomes. |
