Friday, October 28, 2011 1:33:47 AM OldOllie, and that is why I couldn't suggest you have a low IQ, I must admit that the thought process is interesting to say the least. Being extremely picky at the definition, you manage to place a seed of confusion. Bravo sir, indeed. The Oxford dictionary indeed states enslave as "make (someone) a slave" and adds "cause (someone) to lose their freedom of choice or action" But I don't intend to be that picky, I already have the information I needed (it's only the two of us looking at this post by now, anyway:) Good day and again, bravo. |

Thursday, October 27, 2011 11:19:34 PM AGit, I think you don't know the definition of the word "enslave," which is: to make someone a slave. A person is enslaved at the time of capture. The people who buy, transport, sell, or own slaves are not the ones who have enslaved the slave. That was the person or persons who first captured the slave. Europeans definitely participated in every step of the process EXCEPT capturing Africans. Oh, I'm sure there are a few rare exceptions where some unfortunate and unwitting African was standing on the beach waving at the slave ship as it dropped anchor and launched a boat to come ashore and put him in chains, but I assure you, 99% of African slaves were not captured, and therefore were not enslaved by Europeans. In fact, the by the time of the Civil War, most slaves were not captured but were born into slavery. You could say the newborns were enslaved by their parents' owners, but by that time they were Americans, not Europeans. |

Thursday, October 27, 2011 12:48:43 AM OldOllie, I think that the basic problem is that perhaps you don't read carefully enough or maybe I don't make myself clear enough. I haven't insulted you directly (I said "nobody in their right mind", that's pretty generic, not directed as an insult to you), but if you feel offended, go right ahead. You can get picky with that, but what is quite straightforward is that I have opposed your arguments specially "Europeans didn't enslave Africans" and you haven't answered except by insulting and giving me information that I already knew but has nothing to do with the fact that you affirm that "Europeans didn't enslave Africans". Therefore, and to make it as clear as possible: That statement is a total and utter lie. Perhaps it was childish of me to go around pointing out that someone on the internet is wrong (as if it never happens) but I couldn't help it. But I'm not so childish to let insults affect me, so feel free to counter with more insults |

Wednesday, October 26, 2011 8:45:10 PM AGit, you started with the insults when you said I wasn't in my right mind, so you can take your holier-than-thou, condescending, self-deluded, superiority complex, fold it 5 times, and shove it straight up your @$$. The fact that you can't seem to get through your thick skull an into your tiny brain is that European slave traders didn't send their crews off into the interior of Africa to capture slaves. That would have taken way too much time and been far too dangerous to make the effort profitable. They left that chore to other Africans. They pulled into port, loaded the holds, and sailed on the next tide. Many of the slave traders in those ports were actually Muslim Arabs who bought slaves from the Africans and sold them to the Europeans, but even they weren't stupid enough to go out and try to capture slaves themselves. That was a really good way to get yourself killed, and was completely unnecessary. |

Wednesday, October 26, 2011 12:42:53 AM OldOllie, I see that you have to resort to insult, so I guessing that's the limit of your arguments. I won't bother going round and round ad nauseam, it's already written down, please feel free to read again, perhaps you missed something out. You wrote down "Europeans didn't enslave Africans". This is a lie and I felt I had to say so, this spewing of lies and hatred is troublesome. If you want to believe that, go ahead, it's your poor choice. If it was a mistake, just say so and all will be fine. And irrelevant to the conversation, but I didn't learn "leftist crap" as you say, if you really want to know I spent over six years in a private Catholic school that leaned more to the right, funny world huh? |

Tuesday, October 25, 2011 11:49:08 PM ...in no way could anybody in their right mind even suggest a good white guy vs. a bad black guy scenario... AGit, I'm truly sorry for not taking into account your low IQ and limited vocabulary. Instead of using big words like "abomination," I should have said, "Slavery is really, really bad." That's what "abomination" means. I assumed that if you didn't know that, you could look it up. Unfortunately, that that assumption was unwarranted. The Europeans provided a market for slaves thus encouraging African tribes to make war solely for the purpose of capturing slaves to sell to the slave traders. The Europeans and later the Americans, were certainly not without blame for this, but neither were they alone. If you had studied history, (REAL history, not the leftist crap you learned in school) you would know about the history of slavery, how it ended in the west, and how it continues in other parts of the world. |

Tuesday, October 25, 2011 4:28:08 AM @randomxnp, we all struggle with ignorance in our own way, just as it seems that you have some difficulties understanding a basic premise. If I say that Europeans enslaved other human beings in no way does it mean or imply that others did not, it means that Europeans enslaved. Did I say that Africans didn't enslave Africans? I think not. On the other hand, did Ollie say "Europeans didn't enslave Africans"? Yes, he did. And that is what I find unbelievable. I find it funny that people fail to see this |

Tuesday, October 25, 2011 3:59:20 AM AGit "I really find it difficult to believe these words ..." Your struggle with ignorance does not mean those words are in any way ludicrous. They are true. Slavery was pretty close to universal. It was first ended in Europe (Britain took the lead and the Royal Navy worked to stop the trade worldwide). Did you realise also that the Arabs took more slaves over the centuries, many of them from Europe, than people of European extraction took? Is that perhaps another area where you have difficulty with the truth? |
