Sunday, October 23, 2011 4:26:23 AM I wouldn't pin hopes of that particular Libyan liking or even understanding baseball. Just like fat people wearing Nike Air Max trainers. I can guarantee half of 'Merica whooped an hollered at the prospect of a Yank killing the crazed despot, but were greatly let down to find a street urchin clutching the former dictators gun and wearing a Yankees cap. |

Saturday, October 22, 2011 5:46:14 PM "but if it was the New York Post, they'd spell it Gaddafi." Why do you say that? It's not like the Post is noted for its accuracy in anything... |

Friday, October 21, 2011 7:05:32 PM "Gaddafi, not Khadafy" Actually, that's debatable. His name is Arabic, which uses a different alphabet, so it's hard to transcribe some words into English without having to approximate sounds. In standard Arabic there is no "g" and often a "k" is used. Some dialects that were influenced by other languages (ex. Moroccan Arabic, heavily influenced by French) have introduced a "g" to their alphabet, but it is basically the same character as a "k" but with some dots on top of it. As for the ending syllable, the same Arabic character is used for both "y" and long "i" sounds. So basically, either spelling is correct, depending on how the transcriber saw fit to transcribe the Arabic characters into English. |
