They also never use area codes when they give a number either... |

555 is used as a dialling code in movies.
We know this.
Is that all this video is showing? People using it in movies? |

I'm sorry, but what is interesting about this? 'm British, and know that the films use 555 because it is not used in any real US numbers. |

Using 555 for fictional numbers is older than the Tommy Tutone incident,however it was a catalyst the made it this prevalent now. This usage existed as far back as the 60's but is much more noticeable now in today's litigious society with fewer entertainment purveyors insulating themselves from future indemnities. |

So close but not exactly anymore, and the 555 is not the area code it's just the first three numbers of the seven digit telephone number, the area code comes before that.
Anyone else have the urge to call the 555 numbers in this that are not still reserved? |

It's not a cliche, it's to keep stupid people from calling the number.
Phone services specifically set that area code aside to make sure movies have generic phone numbers.
Because otherwise, a million idiots would start calling REAL numbers in the middle of the night, like they did before this policy was put in place. |

I don't think it's so much of a cliche as it is a tool so that morons don't get anywhere if they actually try to call the numbers, like when Tommy Tutone's song Jenny had a bunch of idiots calling 867-5309. |
