Friday, October 07, 2011 2:03:09 AM Just a clarification here: feeling better does not mean curing the problem. A placebo can help with the pain of a disease, but can it also cure the disease that is causing the pain? I'd like to see some studies on that. |

Thursday, October 06, 2011 9:10:49 AM "For a pill to be sold it has to out do (by a fair bit) a placebo in tests" Dunno the regulations of whatever country you live in. But in switzerland and france for example, Homeopathy is really common. Homeopathy, is simply a placebo. However, since the effects of placebo are based on ppl believing it works, selling a placebo marketed as "placebo" would defeat the whole principle. Thus they name it Homeopathy instead, and market that. And I can assure you its huge here, pharmacies often contain tons of them, sometimes more than actual drugs, we have ads for them on TV, in the street, and so on. |

Thursday, October 06, 2011 6:29:01 AM @Finker; yeah, to me religion is both a placebo and a narcotic at the same time. It's not really there, but if you believe in it, it can be addictive and have powerful effects on you. |

Thursday, October 06, 2011 5:45:30 AM Seeing this makes me think religion is a placebo. It works for those that believe in it. |

Thursday, October 06, 2011 5:24:25 AM DeanoBoz. I think when they do the tests for these things they use a double blind randomised test or something. Meaning neither the patient nor the doctor know who is getting which treatment, the test groups are split into two and only the drug company know who is receiving which treatment. Something to do with the ethics of making a doctor prescribe something that has no active chemicals in it (so they may feel as though they aren't giving the best care possible). I know that doesn't count for the part of this film where he says placebo vs. placebo trials, but perhaps the doctors nor the patients know that neither is a real drug, only the drugs companies carrying out the testing know. Not 100% sure though! |

Thursday, October 06, 2011 5:09:24 AM The problem is that you're still being charged the same amount for a placebo at the pharmacy. That smacks of fraud IMHO. |

Thursday, October 06, 2011 4:54:03 AM So, my question is, "Are doctors prescribing placebos, knowing that they are placebos?" The answer must be "Yes". So how is it that "what meds are actually placebos" hasn't EXPLODED on the web during the information age, therefore KILLING the placebo effect? |

Thursday, October 06, 2011 2:58:55 AM Our minds create the medicine..This only shows that our minds are much more powerful than we give it credit for. Doesn't this mean that we can heal ourselves by using our minds..in theory? In that case, what do we need medicine for anyway? WAKE UP |

Thursday, October 06, 2011 12:16:26 AM @xbx214, Yeah pretty much, I played a messed up joke on a friend in high school. He was kind of dumb so it was easier. But I gave him a antacid from the school nurse and after he ate it I told him it was some hardcore psychadelic drug and proceeded to mess with him, like all our friends would move our mouths like we were talking but no one was making a sound. Anyway he ended up freaking out and crying and left school early. Fun times. |

Wednesday, October 05, 2011 6:21:21 PM Placebos don't work on me. Picked some shrooms in my garden I thought was liberty caps. I got no placebo high. Nothing at all, the mushrooms I picked I really thought were what they weren't. I later found out they just looked like the ones I was after because of how young they were when I picked them. (No harm done) And once I smoked some mixing herb I thought I had put some brown in. Got mad that it didn't do poo, but later saw I had smoked the wrong pile. Don't know about pharmaceuticals, as I don't trust them. Didn't take aspiring even when I had killer headaches. Because I just don't want to, my body would go all soft on me if I pampered it. I think that's why I hardly ever get headaches now. Brain knows better then to whine to my pain center. Hurp da durp derp. |
