When crane flies (and their grass-eating leatherjacket grubs) became a blight on lawns here, lots of people grabbed the term DL not knowing what they were. Didn't make them DLs, as we've always had those, but y'know, fighting common misuse is a losing battle. |

Dead_mind: I can't help but be sucked into a riveting debate about daddy longlegs.... so:
Upon further research, I have concluded that we are both potentially right. Daddy longlegs are the common name for a few species of arachnids.
This daddy longlegs or harvestmen, is not a spider (which belong to order the Araneae), but a Opilione. And what I think of when I say daddy longlegs. Look at that ugly bastard.
This daddy longlegs is a spider and belongs to the spider order Araneae. Which I'm assuming is the species you are thinking of:

The daddy long legs he is talking of is not a spider. It is an Opilione (harvestman), a different type of Arachnid.
Also, in the UK, the term daddy long legs refers to the crane fly
