Eh, usually I side with the people but on this one I'm with the cops. He did act excessively, but if two cops just broke up a 4 person fight and are making arrests, what do you expect is going to happen if you run up and grab their arm? |

Professionalism demands restraint when emotions are high. Police must show professionalism. In this case, their emotions should have not been that elevated since this big man was confronting a physically much smaller person. When this breach occurs, the officer leaves is role as a professional and becomes a criminal. He abused his power and should be fired and incarceration. It's expected that the public will get drunk, fight, and break the law. This doesn't give a professional peace officer a free pass to stoup to their level. |

Brutal, yes. Deserved, hell no. This cop will lose his job, or at the very least be suspended for this. If she ends up taking the police force to court for plastic surgery to fix her broken nose, medical costs for her whiplash and for her inability to work and receive a paycheque, it'll be his ass on the line. This situation did not require him to act like that at all, if she would have swung around to defend herself and broke his jaw when he unexpectedly, and without warning, grabbed her by the ass of her pants (never seen that one before) without so much as telling her what was happening when she was blinded by his pepper spray, it would be no fault of hers. |

I was trained in the military to use the following escalation of force:
Commands < pepper spray < baton < side arm
Maybe it's different for cops, but that doesn't change the fact that she no longer posed a threat after he sprayed her in the face. Slamming her face first into the concrete wasn't necessary.
Now I'll go one further: that cop handled the whole thing like a little bitch, hitting her in the legs (still not sure where he learned that or what he thought it would accomplish) with a baton and then spraying her before ever attempting to put her on the ground. You'd think he was dealing with an escaped lion rather than a 90 lb (possibly drunk) female.

Perhaps the police should just show up and ask nicely for people to stop pounding on the car. Perhaps if they showed up offering hugs, handshakes, and free milkshakes everything would work out better...Of course I'm joking, when you decide to break the law or get involved while a cop is making an arrest, you will be dealt with in this fashion. Escalation of force is a text book police tactic...Just sayin... |

Spg - You're right. Don't break the law and your chances of getting a beatdown drop dramatically. But someone with a cop's training should show a hell of a lot more discipline and command of a situation, especially with someone 1/8 his weight. |

The cop knew better than to slam her on her face like that. Take downs are supposed to be controlled for the perp's safety. You can say she deserved it but cops aren't judges. It's not their place to decide to dish out punishment. If you disagree then you must think that Rodney King got what he deserved and those cops were justly acquitted. That's right....I went there.
Also, FYI, don't touch your face if you get pepper sprayed. |
