Baalthazaq: Nothing in the mural, or the picture of it, indicated it was painted in Italy.

Even so it's still disrespectful to every person in their country's military. True, some countries do not train their soldiers to think, but most do.

It's no different than the perpetuation of stereotypes against blacks, hispanics, polish, irish, italians, etc and I'm surprised that you would support such a narrow minded view.

Yeah, I'm sure this makes the soldiers who fight for our defense (and yes--offense) feel REALLY happy about the people they're fighting for.

Anti-war is one thing; anti-soldier is another.

Beelzabob: Have you not read history ? Look at the brilliant accomplishments many of our soldiers have done, and continue to do.

Soldiers DO NOT and ARE NOT trained just to 'do or die' anymore. The Marine Corps motto is "Improvise, Adapt and Overcome" and that takes brains.

Sorry, but you're just wrong as can be, as is the artist.

"Everyone who joins the armed forces must believe in something or else what are they joining for?"

I joined the navy because the GI Bill would pay my way through college. Unfortunately, that was right before we declared war on Iraq. That was, by far, the worst decision I've ever made in my life; those four years were a complete waste of time, and although I am going to college on the GI Bill, I believe that I would have been better off without it.

I don't love the style of this graffiti, but I totally agree with the message.

"So how do you feel about the soldiers in a hypothetical opposing army? They probably believe in a few things, but I doubt you'd support them"

doesn't that go for everyone and not just soldiers? you should never actually hate anyone for what they do because, ultimately, they have their own reasons for doing so and in their own minds they believe they are doing the right thing.

The image should be of taxpayers who do nothing while their elected officials send their children, siblings, and friends to their deaths.

I've always been proud of the men and women in our military, haven't you? Most of the posts on this thread make me sad. Everyone who joins the armed forces must believe in something or else what are they joining for?

-----------

Im proud of the men and women in the military who fight for the rights of the people.

However, im 100% against the leaders of the military and the politicians who send these people to their deaths just because they dont like another president of another country, or that country has something they want.

Ever heard the word patriotism, or the phrase "you made your country proud soldier".... Yea, it is absolutely disgusting.

As for reasons why they join up, lets take teh US as an example. A LOT of people join up purely because they have no life skills and no prospects in life. The military offers then a decent salary, training and good house at the end of their service.... IF they make it out alive.

@AGit

"I can't see soldiers debating whether to follow a certain order or not."

The Nuremberg Trials (and others, no doubt) have established that "I was just following orders" is no excuse when committing an atrocity.

So yes, soldiers SHOULD debate whether to follow a certain order, otherwise there's no hope of them upholding the ethics they are intended to protect.

@NNoamfer: you don't need to prove to anyone that you are Israeli, if they don't believe you then screw them.

@5cats, the fact that I am against war doesn't mean I'm not Israeli. I'm tired of you telling me I'm not. If I could write my fluent Hebrew in here I will.

The last fatal terrorist attack here was when I was like 5, then the second intifada stopped.

In here you are forced to join the military, even with no current war. And guess what? I don't wanna join, but if I don't have a good enough excuse I will end up in jail for a few months. Also, if you don't serve in the military, even for some pretty good reasons (suicidal thoughts, obesity, etc.), you will hardly get a decent job. Which is a good reason for me to hate this place, it's full of discrimination.

"Blah blah soldiers are brainless blah blah I have no idea what I'm talking about"

"That pretty much matches the gist of many posts in here."
Nah, soldiers are field expedient and capable of unique solutions to divergent situations...within the parameters of conflict and it's resolution.
Indoctrinated perhaps, focused on situational tactic and regimen definitely. That is how it works however.

Please understand that as a former soldier I found it to be spot on. For good or for ill the sentiment/statement is accurate. I doubt most posters have experienced boot camp and the situation of complete reliance on their fellow soldiers. They make dogs of war out of we that serve. It is tantamount to brainwashing and Pavlovian conditioning...but ultimately...who do you want to protect your country?

Interesting that so many people here got butthurt and assume it's insulting soldiers, what it says to me is rather that it is criticising the process that indoctrinates soldiers and that they are trained to/expected to blindly follow orders. Whether or not that is how it is in real life is something that can be argued abou, but it's an interesting point nonetheless. Claiming that this should be removed because soldiers fight for 'our freedom and rights' seems oddly paradoxical.

So it's a very well done artistic expression of military indoctrination. They do tear you down and build you back up. I served in the U.S. Army 86-94 and I would imagine the basic technique is universal to any competent military.

The graffiti was good, but some of the comments were undoubtedly better.
Soldiers are tools and as such must serve a purpose. They have to be completely rigid and obedient regardless of their personal opinions. I can't see soldiers debating whether to follow a certain order or not.
Anybody that feels insulted by this has probably had his/her brain removed too and should think about joining the force.

"This is anti...."

Technically Italian Military. If you must know.

Well done to every "patriot" in here who assumed it was American... and who wanted to paint an American flag over it.

Any military matches the morality of their leadership. If any of you would like to preach needing "respect" the Libyan Military, the Iraqi military, the Russian Military, the Chinese Military, and so on and so forth who commit atrocities for the explicit reason that they are a brainless tool aligned solely with the political will of an amoral structure, go ahead.

I will not be joining your bandwagon.

This isn't anti-war, it's anti-veteran and that's not right.

InfantryO, Thank you for your sentiment. I will most assuredly do that. Take comfort in the fact that you and all you know will meet a similar fate. Peace out.

Crackerjack...your patriotic stance is so bilious it has gone from indignant ignorance to self righteous blather in just two sentences. The soldiers are soldiers... Read any history? Apparently not. Theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die. Tools for the machine. The artist conveyed that succinctly, and with the bitter angst of reality.
