Thursday, August 04, 2011 2:26:40 PM Were not as intelligent as a species, when we advocate death and destruction under the name of a makeshift border and a piece of cloth. Is it possible to be a soldier and conduct your own thoughts? or in other words, not pulling your pants down every time your master wants to shag?

Thursday, August 04, 2011 1:03:26 PM Hate the government who abuses them not them. That's kind of the point of this mural. You'll notice that hey're not removing their own brains, the system is removing them during the process of becoming a soldier. It's a criticism of the government and the way it trains soldiers not to question, not a criticism of the soldiers themselves. |

Thursday, August 04, 2011 12:11:27 PM @AGit "Soldiers follow orders, not ethics." And I was saying they should follow ethics above orders. How did you miss that? Poor reading skills? |

Thursday, August 04, 2011 10:35:43 AM Stereotypes are sometimes funny but often offensive. "One size" rarely if ever fits all. If the artist doesn't like the military then why not do something positive instead of categorically insulting millions of men and women he or she doesn't know? |

Thursday, August 04, 2011 9:57:14 AM "doesn't that go for everyone and not just soldiers? you should never actually hate anyone for what they do because, ultimately, they have their own reasons for doing so and in their own minds they believe they are doing the right thing." I hope you misread me there, as it wasn't at all my intention to spew hatred. I don't hate soldiers, I hate their job. I pity the people who go to war and have to kill other human beings and would not like to find myself in that situation, much less send somebody I don't know to kill other people I don't know just because I don't like their boss.

Thursday, August 04, 2011 9:50:06 AM "So yes, soldiers SHOULD debate whether to follow a certain order, otherwise there's no hope of them upholding the ethics they are intended to protect." Soldiers follow orders, not ethics. If you consider it ethical to kill another human being whatever reason may be, I'm glad I don't share the same opinion as you.

Thursday, August 04, 2011 8:57:22 AM ROFL@Serve the country, this mural has nothing against the people who join the army; it shows the obvious faults within the military. Men and women join the army; are forced to become blind to other human being's feelings and lives, and are taught it is all for the 'greater good'. I've seen countless pictures on the internet of "soldiers" taking pictures with dead men, women, and children with a big contempt grin slapped across their face. Guns and death will never be a good thing; No matter what country or reason you are fighting for. |

Thursday, August 04, 2011 8:51:12 AM Thanks to the military the idiot who painted this is given the freedom to express himself. Not all military are good or bad, not all artist are starving idiots, not all Americans are fat , not all Europeans drink wine. |

Thursday, August 04, 2011 7:42:59 AM Then again maybe many admirers of this mural are being a little unfair. But nonetheless this IS the expectation you are faced as a soldier, that is follow orders blindly. Refuse to do so you could either dishonored (or mayber "smeared" is more accurate) or worse executed. We may have statutes that require soldiers to ignore 'illegal' orders but who in the entire chain of command is to going enforce it? How do they even define an 'illegal' order? Ultimately I expect every soldier regardless to own up to their own actions, even they were "just following orders". |

Thursday, August 04, 2011 7:08:08 AM also, i love all the "ex-military" commenters that "completely agree with the sentiment" yet somehow manage to imply that they are above this while their brothers in arms were not... typical self-centered PC kool-aid drinkers. |

Thursday, August 04, 2011 7:02:42 AM i find the irony of a "graffiti artist" creating a commentary on how mindless soldiers are a little overwhelming |

Thursday, August 04, 2011 6:55:01 AM Furthermore look what happened to the Soviet Union. They had such a horrifically flawed system that the VERY HOME and CENTER of the Soviet Union decided to say "fu<k it, we're forming our own AWESOME FEDERATION!". The same would've happened happened to Saddam. |

Thursday, August 04, 2011 6:38:07 AM @5Cats If I was around since at least the 70s I would always hate to think that the Soviet Union was going to be around for another decade. On the flip side I'd always oppose invading them because it WAS a bad idea. |

Thursday, August 04, 2011 6:19:53 AM I think the real message behind this is not a stab at service men and women, but at the whole concept of taking a person and rebuilding them into a grunt who takes orders without question. I have many friends who are ex military and all of them became different people after they joined the military and experienced the terrors of war. Fighting a war changes people, often times for the worst. The various US military systems are nothing but factories churning out grunts who will do the bidding of the non-nice individuals in Washington so they don't have to get off their lazy fat asses and do it themselves. My first comment on IAB after being a reader for 4 years, YAY!!!

Thursday, August 04, 2011 5:48:57 AM You're changing the subject. @Cajun I was question how he could think that war and terrorism 'isn't our problem' considering where he lives, eh? He answers later. No war is "good" any soldier will tell you that. It's always a last resort, and other options are worse. Keep Saddam in power for another decade? Is that OK with you? You harp on ONE reason he was deposed, but ignore the rest. @Dragonlord: teachers killed my imagination, my love of learning, and most of my childhood. I can't tell if this site was always a stoner-hippie-liberal mecca Yup, it's actually getting better @number43. @dogfeet makes a valid point. I don't agree but it's well made |
