These people forget that if they're right about God creating everything, then God must like homosexuals; if God did not, why would he have let it exist in the first place?

Let's from now on call it, informally, the "Angilion Medal". If you're down, I'm down.

I'm honoured to receive the Overmann Medal.

I think it would be inappropriate to rename the prize, even informally. After all, they don't rename the Nobel Prize to the name of the most recent winner and the Overmann Medal is nearly as important :)

Unfortunately mathematics does not lie.Sorry. You can get all upset and act all superior, but the facts remain.

I have seen some ridiculous false appeals to authority, but that deserves a prize.

Maths doesn't lie, but that doesn't mean it's impossible for a person to lie about maths or simply to not understand its application.

You cannot prove evolution doesn't exist using maths. Simple as that. You're just claiming you can so that you can use maths as a false appeal to authority.

This is getting to be not in the slightest bit fking funny anymore. He that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death. -- Exodus 21:15. Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: [it shall be] a statute for ever throughout your generations. Leviticus 10:9.

Don't see anyone who thinks homosexuality is wrong following these teachings also.

BTW I am not a Religious person, and I only breath through my mouth when I have a plugged nose. Anyone who says they know all the answers is either a liar, or delusional. Atheist really have a huge chip on their shoulders lately. Don't go all Stalin on us people.

I've heard creationists (Sarah Palin specifically) question evolution by saying: "If man evolved from primates why are there still primates"? As if she had the capacity to come up with brilliance that would prove Darwin wrong.
Of course she said this at a speech where she gained loud applause and laughter and questioning her was an impossibility. It would be nice to someday see an interviewer point out to her that dogs evolved from wolves and there are still wolves, just to see the look on her face.

Yeah, I know it's a silly thing, but I'd like to offer it to you. We're kindred spirits, I feel.

If it's of any interest to you, here was the inception of the "Overmann Medal". Right here. Read the whole thread if you have the time, it's a juvenile conversation, but it's worth the read. Let's from now on call it, informally, the "Angilion Medal". If you're down, I'm down.

In my recenly posted Mod Profile, I said that my proudest moment was "Anything involving shooting down mouth-breathing, sky-mumbling, God-bothering Young Earth Creationists. In particular, the inception of The Overmann Medal, awarded for Unselfish Services to Rational Free Thought in the Face of Overwhelming Idiocy"

Since the great user Overmann has since moved on to pastures new, I would like to rename The Overmann Medal to The Angilion Medal. "Awarded for Unselfish Services to Rational Free Thought in the Face of Overwhelming Idiocy"

Thank you Angilion. You were right in your first comment, that was exactly the message I was trying to convey, thanks for that (was out for a couple of days).

Also, please be encouraged that some users like myself, and I presume many unspoken lurkers, genuinely do follow these older threads, even if they don't comment, or even sign up for an account. It's certainly not a futile effort, we have over a million registered users on I-A-B. That's not hits, that's repeat visitors. Not too bad.

Point is, when you write something on here, there's quite a lot of people reading it. Which is healthy and good.

A useful example is disease.

The germ theory of disease states that the available evidence indicates that some diseases are caused by germs.

Note that it is a theory, because it explains a group of observations (i.e. people getting different diseases).

Does that mean it's a speculative guess that's probably wrong?

In the extremely unlikely event that it is wrong, does that mean that disease doesn't exist?

ii) The theory of evolution is not evolution.

That should be obvious, but so many people who are determined to remain ignorant and/or liars have devoted so much effort to confusing the two that it's necessary to point it out.

Science roughly goes like this:

Observe that something happens.
Hypothesise a rational explanation.
Test the hypothesis.
Develop a theory to explain the wider context.
Test the theory.

Evolution is a thing that happens. It is the observation. It exists completely independently of the theory explaining how it works. Even in the extremely unlikely event of the theory being wrong (bear in mind that it has been tested a multitude of times over lifetimes), evolution would still exist. It is a thing that happens.

Ah hell, I'd better drag it all out again just in case anyone thinks that cbdsw isn't talking complete rubbish.

i) Common usage hugely corrupts the meaning of "theory". Science doesn't. So it has a completely different meaning in science. It is not a guess. It is not probably wrong. It is a broad-ranging explanation of a type of thing observed to happen. If it's a current theory, it means that many people have tried and failed to prove it wrong, starting with the scientist(s) who came up with it. Once a theory is published, it's open season on it forever and it only remains current while *every* attempt to disprove it fails *every* time.

If a billion people test a theory in a million different ways and it passes every test every time and it's used every day to predict what will happen and it's utterly right every time...it remains a theory.

I can prove evolution as explained by popular theory to be impossible by mathematics.

No you can't. You're either monumentally ignorant of science in general and the theory of evolution in particular or you're a liar pretending to be that ignorant.

You wrote "All science gives on on the hard questions is theories."

You actually wrote that.

Nobody with the vaguest inkling of a clue could write that.

Either you have no understanding of science at all or you're lying about it for the purposes of propaganda. Either way, your opinion of science is worthless.

I'm not being a dick and there is no issue here, I really don't get it.

He was giving one of the millions of examples that refute the ridiculous claim that all science offers is speculation that's probably wrong or definitely wrong. Much of modern life is a direct result of science - it's probably the biggest single factor in human civilisation nowadays.

To davymid. I know where plastic comes from. You make no sense. Science can be watched but how the hell does that prove any theory brought forth from the science community. Science knows only speculation when it comes to origin. Don't assume to much there big fella. I can prove evolution as explained by popular theory to be impossible by mathematics. Can you prove no God with the same?

LOL, well my offer is serious. I have always wanted to get to know someone from IAB in real life. Most of us put up such facades here, it hardly reflects our true dynamics.

Christians,Muslims,Jews,Etc. accept a god. Athiests do not. Of the two groups,Athiests are not saying you will go to hell if you don't agree with them.

"A person would need more faith to believe in unmonitored evolution than in a deity."

You sadden me.

I'm going to look at cute cat pictures for a while, to remind myself that there are wonderful things in this world to balance out the fact that this world includes you.

People need to be more tolerant and accepting, whether it be for gays, christians, muslims or any other religion...as long as it isn't affecting you, butt out.

I most definitely was not expecting the outcome to the proposition 8 vote...

I totally expected it. NEVER underestimate the power of stupidity.

California is, after all the same state that came up with Ebonics, wants to ban incandescant light bulbs and outlawed the word 'minority'.
