Thursday, July 14, 2011 5:08:15 PM @YugureKage We do have a "native language"--it's English. We just don't have a legally recognized national language. |

Thursday, July 14, 2011 3:14:38 PM The US does not have a native language, nor do we have Citizen cards like many place in Europe and I think Canada as well. I wish I a place to cite for this information more than my Contemporary social issues psychology class in college. There are multiple things wrong with that statement. First of all not all of America speaks English. Obviously, central and south America speak a variety of spanish and indigenous languages. North america, Canada has two national languages, French and English. So yeah, these women are idiots. |

Thursday, July 14, 2011 2:26:12 PM I didn't think English was the native language of the US? All sounds a bit hypocritical to me. |

When my mome imigrated to the U.S. she had to learn to speak our language. Back then they didn't translate drivers licenses and everything like they do now. Okay, she was raised in England so it was probably easier for her than most, but still |

Thursday, July 14, 2011 12:53:07 PM I was just in Japan for 6 weeks, and I met many people from other countries who moved to Japan. I'd meet Thai and Indian people, for instance, who would say to me "I'm sorry, but please excuse me because I don't speak English very well", and I'd realize they were apologizing about their THIRD language, which they still spoke more articulately than most Americans I know. |

Thursday, July 14, 2011 11:20:22 AM I speak Spanish bc I chose to learn it and I live in Texas. My step mother for example has been living in the US for 14 years since she married my father and has yet to learn any English. It has made life very hard in many ways. Say all you want Musuko42 "first world problems, how hard" but immigrants choose to come to America for a better life and usually to make money to send back home. I have worked with many immigrants from many places but since they come here looking for a new start and better life a lot of them work the system as well and they wont deny it! My sister works for Health and Human services and on a daily basis deals w immigrants illegal and legal who cant speak a word of English, who cant work, have 5+ kids who need food, shelter etc all on Americans dime. All I am saying is that my girls deserve a full education Pre-K-12 grade no matter what as ANY American citizen should. |

Thursday, July 14, 2011 9:21:41 AM You guys don't seem to get it, there's a difference between supporting immigrants, thinking they should learn & speak english.. which all makes sense.. and walking around with your friends in some huge t shirts saying "welcome to america" in patriotic letters followed by "now speak english!". I mean come on what's the point, I bet they have the "I support the troops" thing on their car and the aids awareness pin and the 20 feet tall us flag pole in their backyard etc.. Only in the US do you see that kind of stuff.. it's weird. |

Thursday, July 14, 2011 9:19:06 AM What I don't understand is where these English speaking Americans are going where they are actually offended/effected/debilitated by non-English speakers. I don't speak a lick of Spanish, and I've traveled a lot... I've never had a situation where I couldn't go about my normal life because of people speaking another language around me. I guess I just don't how it effects them to hear others speaking Spanish. |

Thursday, July 14, 2011 8:31:00 AM If you are going to move to a country and live there you need to learn to speak the language. Being able to speak English should be a requirement to be a citizen, and no concessions should be made for anyone that is not, nor should a illegal hamper the lifestyle of anyone that is. You shouldn't have to go anywhere with a interpreter. Now if you are just on vacation or here on some approved work then sure it shouldn't be expected, though if you come to a country often enough you should make the effort to learn the language.
