Sounds like that Mayor is gonna make some heads roll for this. Also I don't think that guy will be on the council much longer if this is how he is gonna treat the public.

This was a stunt, possibly setup between the mayor and J.J. The thing I found odd, is how she is only there to address the public, is that not a misuse of the system? I don't know how it all works, I just know your supposed to address the guys behind the benches, not turn your back to them and push your agenda on the audience.

This woman had the floor and the right to speak, no one can interrupt that except the leader giving her the floor in the first place.

The councilperson's interruption was out of order according to standard parliamentary procedure.

The lady speaking had the floor, she was not being violent or threatening in anyway, therefore the police should've stood down and let her talk. You can bet there will be lawsuits over that illegal arrest.

That was retarded. The mayor wasn't having her arrested, it was the rest of the council violating procedure because they didn't like it. They guy on the left was trying to call a vote, even though they aren't allowed to when someone has the floor.

@ DShephard were you watching the same video i did? from what i heard she said something the bald guy didnt like and he had her removed. Someone off screen tried to stand up for her rights, but didnt work. Fire the cops and the bald guy is what i say, but as long as we live in a police state masked as a democracy, sadly, this will continue to happen

It wasn't the mayor ordering her to step down, as some have suggested in this thread. The Mayor was ordering the police to leave her alone so she could speak.

Pink slips all around I say! I'm tired of seeing people bullied by government. Walkouts only allow them to do what they are gonna do. What they should have done was each go up and continue her speech for her and let them try to arrest the whole room. Good to see they get their recount.

Of course! Women have no place in Council. (That's obviously a joke.)

All kidding aside, they were pulling her out, which was all they went to do, she resisted and therefor was arrested.

She was not arrested for speaking, but rather not leaving when told to do so.

Telling her to leave in the situation present was also not wise, so they have some blame too.

Long story short: People screw up.

Quartzite, AZ Town Code

Go read sections 2-2-4 and 2-4-6
The mayor is not given any particular power, and as soon as one council member requests that a member of the public step down from the podium they are supposed to do so.
If you wanna get totally technical...

Guess we know which council members are slipping more cash to the police department in that city.

@jamie76 not all mayors have the same power. It depends on the city charter

I can gurantee you that if a officer refuses to comply with a lawful order issued to him by the mayor, who is essintially in charge of the police dept. that officer will be fired.

the mayor has the authority to put officers on review and bring them before a hearing to determine if they were insubordinate and believe me, from the few times I have seen this happen, the officer loses.

"the purpose of "addressing the council" is to address the council. Not talk to the body of spectators. When told to step down, she should have."

She was told to step down by someone who didn't have the authority to do it, and should not have stepped down. The person running the meeting repeatedly backed her up. She shouldn't have resisted the officer's orders, however.

"Don't be dumb you're basically saying if a cop comes to try to have sex with you and you don't want them to you can't resist or they have the right to arrest you."

Having sex is not part of a police officers duty. Maintaining order in a meeting hall such as this is part of their job.

Let's say that you're standing on your yard, minding your own business, filming your kids play. A police officer comes over and tells you to put the camera down. You refuse, because it's your lawn and you're within your rights to film your kid on your lawn. The officer starts to arrest you for not following his order, and you physically resist.

The officer was wrong in his initial order. You were within your rights to continue to record your child on your lawn. You still resisted the wrongful arrest being made, and therefore are resisting arrest. Depending on the severity of your resisting, you'll probably have the charges dropped, and maybe get paid for your troub
