Tuesday, June 28, 2011 3:37:39 PM @random, you should email NASA, I'm sure they'll want to know your 'self confessed not a genius' opinions. |

Monday, June 27, 2011 10:16:11 PM random882: Evidently you don't know just how large this new rover actually will be. It's about the size of a Jeep, It's heavy and will need those rockets to ensure a soft landing. |

Monday, June 27, 2011 10:14:14 PM So they're going to spend billions just to tell us that mars is made out of the same boring elements our earth is made out of... I was under the impression that those people didn't like to waste tax payers money, guess I was wrong. |

Monday, June 27, 2011 4:29:29 PM Angell, it's in the large fuel tanks on the capsule. It's not as visible in the animation but a huge portion of the landing thingy is fuel. |

Monday, June 27, 2011 12:17:53 PM "Too many stages. The more stages there are, the better chance that one of the stages will fail and the whole project becomes a waste." Maybe the guys at NASA should take the advice of the 40-49 year old dude on iab since they have no idea what they are doing... |

Monday, June 27, 2011 10:56:45 AM @RPossum there are many many difficulties with safely landing these things. mars is so far away it takes video feed 10 minutes to reach earth, the camera on the rover looks down and has programming to avoid falling in a hole or landing on a steep slope or atop a rock. it hovers there so scientists can aim it's landing in case the equipment is over a bad spot. a parachute could land it anywhere. the top flies away as to not fall and damage the rover. these things cost 2.5 billion and take up to 2 years to plan. you can guess they dont want to risk anything in deploying them. |

Monday, June 27, 2011 10:19:24 AM @RPossum the real advantage of the propulsor is you can control where land exactly where you want even if the situation change not possibkle with a parachute and mars atmosphere is really thin so you don't have much time to slow down landing on mars always have been a headache |
